Preface:I find it diverting when writer-artists use anthropomorphized animals to act out historical events. I guess cartoon animals are easier for us to look at than other humans. I've found that, in learning about particularly bloody events in history, this practice makes it easier for some to view visual learning material, thus making it easier for them to learn.
Rights & Unity is a historical fiction story about two American brothers, Billy and his little brother Johnny, who fight for opposing sides during the American Civil War. I chose to use raccoons because they're American, when anthropomorphizezed, they're rather expressive, I can strategically use them to play around with the word ''coon' (the word's used in a few songs that are pretty catchy), and...because raccoons are pretty darn cute most of the time.
And yes, I'm aware that I fudged the drawing of the ampersand and it looks like a cursive S.

Raccoons are my favorite animals to work with too, as you can probably tell. 
This is a very neat story. I know that in real life, sometimes it really was literally brother fighting against brother.

The design's gone through a bit of revision since I drew this one. The feel and idea were what mattered at the time, though, I think.

I'm writing my "Furtopia" space adventure as a story first and then more art of key scenes. The story is just too big to do as a comic and I'd get nowhere doing it that way.

Cool. I had plans of starting Rights & Unity as some kind of illustrated novel and then, hopefully, popularity permitting, it would evolve into other, more marketable media (though novels are still widely bought).

Oh yes. An important thing to note when drawing Billy and Johnny in the same scene as other characters, is that they're raccoon sized raccoons. I don't remember if you told me that the mice in Baker's Dozen were mouse-looking humans or human-acting mice. I think it was the latter, so Billy and Johnny might look small compared to them.
