Description

A small venture back into the land of mirrors, as parallels were involved. So there are more wild characters in the Akame Ga Kill world, especially on the Jaeger side, who has a very unique member named Seryu Ubiquitous. She has a strong sense of justice, to the point that it's a thirst that can never be quenched, for she's endlessly on the search for evil to punish. She's also willing to allow her body to be implanted with all kinds of firearms and combat arms to deal with any threat that comes her way. Her sense of justice is one that warped into a bloodlust, and any person that has committed a crime, no matter how small, is subject to a massacre at her hands. It's crazy, and as such, pretty cool.

I really liked the parallel between a character who has good intentions, but they becomes this completely other thing that becomes near unrecognizable, and played around with that idea a bit. And also threw a mirror in there to see what would result lol. I really pushed on having a more emphasized expression for "dark" Seryu, by having the lines going all around the eyes and the smaller irises put in to achieve a dread-like expression, which I feel works to a good effect. I also had to reshade most of "dark" Seryu because I wanted the severely dark skin tone to be prominent on her whole body, but I had to make the other colors darker to compensate or it'd look off.

I also really liked the idea of Seryu giving a fist up expression, because I think a fist has strong ties to it. I thought of how someone can rule with an iron fist, which is applicable for "dark" Seryu's case, but it has power symbolized with it, where it can also act as a symbol to moralize people. It's something I think can represent good or evil. In a way, this image also slightly represents paths that Seryu can choose to take, which is a small something I went for.

Also, oh man, I had forgotten how much time goes into mirrored imagery, it allows you to better understand how a body is set up, but I think I could use a break from the mirrors, go for a few more simple pieces.

In a show I made up based on Lego Dimensions, Seryu and Korro redeem themselves and join Night Raid.

Words may only get you so far, she might need a show of worth. But I see no wrong in that assumption.

Well, maybe not that far. If they were causing a fuss, she might. Otherwise, I'd expect she want to see you stop petty crimes on the street, just to see how strong and immediate your will of justice is.

If anime fans want someone to hate, how about Meowth from Pokemon. Give Seryu credit, crazy as she was, she at least THOUGHT she was on the right side! But Meowth is cruel, dishonest, disloyal, greedy, and underhanded, and he's PROUD of that! I hope he dies! In the show I made up, he almost kills everyone, resulting in him getting banished to the Phantom Zone!

Drawing a mirror image is a bit challenging to do, considering that you want to get the angles correct and reinforce the fact that, yes, it is a mirror.

As for the character... shitty show that I can't stand, yet I find the character interesting due to her warped sense of justice and the fact that something was clearly wrong with her.  That might be the nicest I'll ever say for an Akame no Kill character, so Seryu getting the props is a surprise.

That... and I like some Scrappies.

Yeah, absolutely, it's one thing to draw a character in full, but to do so again in the same piece at another angle is a true test of the mind. I've only done the mirror scenario twice, and even though I've improved on it a lot, there's still a bit of road for me to travel before I really feel like I've got the hang of it.

A lot of people are pretty conflicting when it comes to the show, some dislike it because of how later episodes deviated from the source material, how quickly some characters get killed off, etc. But I still really enjoyed it, because I liked the concept of "anyone can die at any time" and how that was something that also applied to the protagonists. I will say, once it got into the later episodes, I was a tad skeptical of how they approached some ideas, and even though I didn't like all of it, I'll still say I enjoyed the show overall.

Seryu really was a standout character, she had a personality at a higher level than any of her allies, so even though you aren't a fan of the show, hearing someone say something positive about an aspect of a show is pretty nice to see. I do like when people don't like a show, they can still say something about it is good. Actually, they can hate a show entirely, I just like knowing the reasons that go into it.

Many thanks for the comment!

It is a real challenge, especially with an artist that isn't as technically inclined or skilled... or they get confused easily by simple actions, and believe me, I'll never work a proper walk cycle in animation because such a basic repeatable action gets to me.  You gotta be just right in the proportions while maintaing the detailings and also having it at an angle to justify that they aren't looking at a clone of themselves hiding in some box.

Well, that's justifiable, becuase no matter the genre, if you adapt something based off of a preexisting work, it's a no-win situation.  If you stick true to it, you'll be praised for following how the story goes, but get condemned for working on the less-than-flattering parts of it.  And if you try to do things your way, you get people upset (or hopeful).

Frankly, I'm not a fan of killing in fiction, not because I'm squeamish about it (being honest about it), but because how cheap and trivial the death of characters have become.  To have the gravity of a person's demise mean a lot, you have to put a lot of effort into building that character and their personality; otherwise, they might as well be a red-shirted Ensign.  And, Seryu had much more of a personality than the others in her group.  By and long shot... well, that, and how she committed the least amount of atrocities, IMO (her only real sin was being a Hero Killer, which makes you an instant Scrappy, if you like that dumb Tropespeak).

I'm still surprised (and very disappointed) that they didn't bother animating the end of that chapter where Seryu dies where all of those kids show up for soccer practice and wonder where she's at, unaware of the fact that she lost a battle and blew up.  That provided a unique telling of the way a character works, because we are so accustomed to the presentation that once a villain dies, everybody forgets about them (unless they were friends of or related to said villain) because nobody liked them.  While the idea is to focus on the good guys and their efforts to destroy the evil Imperial Empire and the soldiers that work it, I would prefer it if you step back and point out that some of these people are still human and that their actions.  I also tend to be more forgiving of characters who clearly have broken brains (unless the reason why they are broken was because of their own doing, such as experimentation), as opposed to intentionally malicious, which fits most of the other villains in the series.  Seryu did willingly modify herself, but this was long past the point where Seryu's thought process was properly oriented and recent events in the story destroyed what little left of her cohesiveness she had.  But, enough rambling.

Yeah, I wanted to say that.  I will admit there are things that I cannot muster anything nice about (Attack on Titan), but I usually try to give things I didn't enjoy a bright spot by pointing out a certain character or a concept, and Seryu was that for me in this series.  I also wanted to explain why I didn't like it, which is hard to do on the Internet, because fans will jump on you for having an opinion completely different from their own.

You're very welcome.

She is so creepy....she really has a twisted sence of justice. You managed to capture her creepy side perfectly. I get shivers from the images it reminds me of.....
And that ugly dog of hers.... I already had problems with dogs in real life before I watched this anime orz

Good work. And I liked your artist's comment

JackTheMaverick In reply to joiski [2014-10-16 07:41:55 +0000 UTC]

Thank you kindly, I really pushed to get the dark side of her personality to be expressed with all kinds of lines going on around her face, so I'm glad to hear I was able to capture that side very well! Also, her battle against Sheele and Mine and how she completely went no mercy mode on Sheele was quite a terrifying sight to see, when she let that side take her over completely. Also, lol yeah, the dog is in a league of his own when it comes to what he can do. A league just under Seryu imo.

And yeah, I feel like most of that comment, even though I said what I wanted to, started to drag on a little bit. The line about fists turned into its own paragraph. That wasn't intentional. >_> Many thanks for the comment!
