Hey, I recognize this image from a World Vision shirt my mother has... cool.

I love the texture and feel of the cloth the character is wearing, and the general light and mood is fantastic aswell. It invokes a slight gloomyness and sadness, yet a strong sence of power

How did you get the glow around him so bright? it's almost as if the glow is brighter than the white on my computer screen

***oops, forgot to hit "Reply" **** i used a mattboard that is slightly toned, so i put in some highlights here and there with a white charcoal pencil to get it to pop a bit. hope that answers your question, and thanks for the comment.

i do not like how the image portrays a scence of poverty i dislike the qualty and texture of the image,. i hate how the image is rappped around the blanket and the hands are kinda distorted. to tell u the truth, hamds would not come out of the blanket like they are. the drawing is to dark to synicale and most of all unethical.

?? why dont you like a scene of poverty? o_o why do you feel the drawing is unethical?

leafleigh In reply to kaorishima [2006-04-28 02:19:01 +0000 UTC]

the scene of poverty shows an undelying factor of fear and sadness. i am constantly around fear and sadness every where i go in the city of melbourne and to tell u the truth i hate looking at any piece of art work and being reminded of that. i love to look and gaze upon art for hours and i love to fell happy allmost warm and fuzzy of the inside. i hope u understand and i hope i have not come across rude. hope to here from u soon.

also. what do u like about the work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

jackyll In reply to leafleigh [2006-04-13 01:55:55 +0000 UTC]

well the last thing I wanted this piece to be percieved as is "unethical" and Im terribly sorry you feel that way. The image can easily be related to poverty, and if that is a reason you dislike it then I, again, apologize. But this is no mockery of poverty, quite the contrary. This is, among many things, a statement about how poverty is prison. The barbed wire fence makes it impossible to escape, and the environmental desolation of the piece is quite evident and should be translated literally in that sense. As far as the textures and background go, im sorry you dislike them, thank you for any feedback. Lastly, your perception of the drawing being "cynical," although can be blamed partially on the drawing, has actually more to do with your own mindset. I cannot evoke cynicism in you---the viewer is responsible for his/her own interpretation of the piece, you can see the worst in it, or the best. its your choice, and while I deeply respect how any person interprets the piece, I will not take responsibility for your cynicism. Thanks for the comment though.

The background is a little empty, but that helps focusing on the character, that really deserves the attention!
FANTASTIC, I must say!
The shading of the coat and face, and the details of face and hands are just amazing!
Keep it up!

Wow. The expression on that face has been seen a lot of places, but it never ceases to stun. Great job on this. Maybe it's just me, but I don't see any major flaws with your scanning. It came out just right. ^_^ What a powerful picture indeed. Any particular reason you decided upon the title? Or was it just for the irony? Interesting indeed. I hope you continue to produce such pieces.

Ciao. ^_~

jackyll In reply to bRoKeNgRiN [2006-04-12 22:06:21 +0000 UTC]

thank you for your comment, and in regards to the title, i tried to pick a title that left the theme of the piece open for subjective interpretation, it is ironic, but it can still be interpreted differently by each viewer. with that said, i think the piece itself can be interpreted literally or metaphorically. but mainly, to me, it is about many of the issues that the world faces, as well as us, psychologically and existentially.

Elora-Danen [2006-04-12 20:35:21 +0000 UTC]

three things:

1. "My apologies for the poor scan quality." this is considered apologizing profusely? (according to ^zeruch ) that made me laugh
2. I don't agree with Temeraire regarding the background. I like that the emphasis is on the figure, with a sort of fish bowl effect to the background. The simplistic nature of the background adds to the overall mood.
3. WOW

admires your skill
