Description
"Show me how to get some pythons like... Chief Wahoo McDaniel."Lets continue our Disney/Warner Bros. 100th Anniversary celebration with the Aqua Teen's feature-length adventure where they team up with some of their enemies as they try to figure out a way to bring back their creator; Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters.
Before the main feature, a faux theatre concession stand advertisement plays. A group of anthropomorphic theater snacks, The Soda Dog Refreshment Band, sings a spoof of Let's All Go to the Lobby until they are interrupted by another snack band. They proceed to loudly sing some of their own bizarre theater rules as a death metal song before finishing on a guitar solo.
The film starts properly in Egypt in a purposely indeterminable time, where Master Shake, a milkshake, Frylock, a box of french fries, and Meatwad, a ball of ground meat, break free from within the Sphinx and are attacked by an oversized poodle who kills Frylock before Shake defeats it.
Shake and Meatwad flee with Frylock's corpse and meet "Time Lincoln", who revives Frylock. When the Central Intelligence Agency break into his house, Time Lincoln helps the Aqua Teens escape in a wooden rocket ship. Time Lincoln is shot, changing history and resulting in the Confederate States of America's winning the American Civil War, with the CIA agents being made slaves to a Black Kentucky Colonel as punishment for their crimes against the South.
All this, however, is just an elaborate story concocted by Shake to explain their origin to Meatwad. Meanwhile, a slice of watermelon named Walter Melon observes events of the Aqua Teens from his watermelon spaceship, including a backyard concert performed by Meatwad and his dolls.
When Shake plans to use his new exercise machine; the Insanoflex, Frylock notices that it is not assembled properly, and the instructions cannot be found. After searching for them online, he finds a message warning not to assemble the machine.
Frylock calls the website's listed phone number, which is revealed to be that of Emory and Oglethorpe, the Plutonians. Before bothering answering the phone, they discover the Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past from the Future on board with them.
The Ghost explains to the two aliens the story of the Insanoflex: the machine, when assembled, will exercise a man into a super-being, who will attract all the women on Earth, leading to massive inbreeding and the eventual extinction of mankind.
To prevent this, the Ghost travels to the past (not before traveling forward to The Bahamas first) and steals a screw that holds the machine together. The Plutonians, now determined to get the machine, point out to him that the screw could easily be replaced: someone can buy another screw or shove a pencil into the screw hole.
Now its up to the Aqua Teens to get the remaining pieces before they fall into the wrong hands.
The story is a major mixed bag as it is very bizarre and nonsensical, which does fit seeing how this is an "Aqua Teen" movie, but what made it work for the show is that it was in small doses, and honestly doesn't really work for a feature-length film. That, and it can get pretty convoluted and unfocused with all the side plots and detours. But it was kinda neat to see the origins of the trio.
While the show's humor does work for the show as it would be very unpredictable, wacky, and crass, but again, the show made it work in small doses, and while there are definitely some very funny moments, for a feature-length movie based on a very crude show, you can only take in so much before it starts to get tiring. That, and there are some jokes that do fall flat.
The movie does have some action scenes that can be pretty neat like the opening prologue with the Aqua Teens escaping from Egypt, and later with Time Lincoln from the CIA, them fighting off Dr. Weird and Steve in his lair, the robot's rampage across town, and the final battle in the lair.
The animation is pretty much the same as it is from the show, which can be a double-edged sword on on one hand, since this is based on a very low budget and crude Adult Swim show, and the budget was super low, it does stay very loyal and does look like the show. But on the other hand, it really pales in comparison to other 2D animated films released in the same year like "The Simpsons Movie", "Persepolis", "Cinderella III", and "Superman: Doomsday". There is also some CGI involved, which again, for a show like "Aqua Teen" it would fit, but thw show practically never used CGI, and on it's own, it looks really bad.
The characters are all still pretty much the same as they were in the show, but they still manage to be pretty likable.
The Aqua Teens themselves are still likable protagonists as they do still work great off each other thanks to their quirks and differing personalities like Shake being all arrogant and impulsive, Frylock being more serious and level-headed, and Meatwad being all gullible and snarky.
The rest of the characters from the show are also still pretty likable and funny, and they do play a decent part in the story like the short-tempered Carl, the trouble-making Mooninites, the abrasive Plutonians, the talkative Cybernetic Ghost, the ever-changing MC Pee Pants, and the kooky Dr. Weird and his assistant Steve. There's also a brief cameo from Space Ghost.
As for any of the characters exclusive to the movie like Chicken Bittle and Linda, they're honestly not very strong characters and are pretty forgettable.
The voice acting is still pretty solid like in the show, and the actors do still deliver some good performances like Dana Snyder as Shake, Carey Means as Frylock, Dave Willis as Meatwad, Carl, and Ignignokt. C. Martin Croker as Dr. Weird and Steve, Matt Maiellaro as Cybernetc Ghost and Err, MC Chris as MC Pee Pants, Andy Merrill as Oglethorpe, and Mike Schatz as Emory. There's also some guest stars that do lend their voices for this movie like Bruce Campbell and Tina Fey.
Like the show, there's really not that much music in the movie and only pops up from time to time. But it is a little decent. But the songs are all honestly pretty forgettable.
Overall, while this isn't a bad movie by any means, i think it shows that some TV shows are best left as just that. I don't really see myself rewatching it anytime soon.
