Description
"Hug me, brotha!"Lets look at one of Nickelodeon's most beloved sitcoms where two step-brothers encounter many hijinks.
The series revolves around two teenage stepbrothers, Drake Parker and Josh Nichols, who live in San Diego, California with Drake's biological mother Audrey, younger sister Megan; and Josh's biological father Walter. Drake is cool and popular, having his own band and being a ladies man, yet can be absent minded. While Josh, is an intellectual, clumsy and awkward; yet very loving and caring. The two boys are often involved in comedic escapades and challenges while also handling an array of teenage problems.
Pros:
1. Drake and Josh are both very likeable protagonists.
2. Several great and likeable side characters like Megan, Audrey, Walter, Helen, Craig, Eric, Mindy, Gavin, and Crazy Steve.
3. Amazing character development and chemistry throughout the series.
4. The humor is amazingly well handled and very funny.
5. Lots of memorable moments and quotes, both humorous and heartwarming.
6. On top of being very funny, it's also very charming and heartwarming.
7. Pretty good production values for a Nickelodeon sitcom at the time.
8. The show has a very well balanced tone that can range from laid back to chaotic.
9. Some pretty neat music, and some very well done songs.
10. The writing for this show is amazingly well done.
11. Great acting.
12. Lots of great episodes like the Pilot, Dune Buggy, Believe Me Brother, Two Idiots and a Baby, First Crush, Grammy, The Bet, Movie Job, Football, Pool Shark, Smart Girl, Little Diva, Blues Brothers, Driver's License, The Gary Grill, Drew and Jerry, Honor Council, The Drake and Josh Inn, We're Married, Mindy's Back, The Affair, Playing the Field, Helen's Surgery, Paging Dr. Drake, Foam Finger, Girl Power, Megan's New Teacher, Little Sibling, The Demonator, Alien Invasion, Josh Runs Into Oprah, Vicious Tiberius, Mindy Loves Josh, Who's Got Game?, The Great Doheny, I Love Sushi, The Storm, My Dinner with Bobo, Tree House, Josh is Done(My personal favorite episode), Eric Punches Drake, Megan's Revenge, Steered Straight, Megan's First Kiss, Battle of Panthatar, Helicopter, Dance Contest, and Really Big Shrimp.
Cons:
1. The characters can have their unlikeable moments every now and then. But honestly, my least favorite character in the whole show is Mrs. Hayfer due to her complete hatred and unfairness to Drake.
2. A few bad episodes. The biggest example being Theater Thug.
3. Like most sitcoms, the laugh track can get annoying at times.
Overall:
This is a Nickelodeon sitcom that's just as great now as it was back then, and can even rank among the best Nickelodeon shows alongside their animated ones. I highly recommend this series.
Rating:
9/10
Production Notes and Trivia:
1. Drake Bell and Josh Peck had previously acted together on The Amanda Show, created by Dan Schneider. Bell and Peck had differing personalities, which inspired Schneider to create a new show starring them as characters with traits similar to their own.
2. An unaired pilot episode featured Stephen Furst as Walter Nichols, although he was busy with another project when Drake & Josh was picked up as a series, and Jonathan Goldstein was cast in the role instead.
3. Production was put on hold in late December 2005, after Bell was injured in a car crash. Bell had filmed three episodes of the fourth season prior to the accident. Filming resumed in March 2006. The following month, Nickelodeon greenlit an additional seven episodes for the fourth season.
