Description
"Seriously, what's up with those little, baby hands?"Lets continue our Disney/Warner Bros. 100th Anniversary celebration with the story of an underdog dinosaur as he finds his courage to become the leader of his herd as well as become a hero for the ages; Walking with Dinosaurs.
A paleontologist named Zack takes his nephew Ricky and his niece Jade on a fossil hunt in Alaska while their parents are on vacation in Europe. While alone, Ricky encounters an anthropomorphic raven named Alex, who then transforms into a prehistoric ancestor, Alexornis. Alex tells Ricky of a story set in the Late Cretaceous period, 70 million years ago, about his best friend Patchi.
Patchi is the youngest and smallest in a litter of Pachyrhinosaurus hatchlings and is often bullied by his older brother Scowler. Their father Bulldust is the leader of the herd. Alex, who is Patchi's mentor, protector, and teacher, tries to help Patchi impress a female Pachyrhinosaurus named Juniper, but her herd migrates south without him.
Patchi is also attacked by a Troodon, which attempts to eat him, but he is saved by his dad, resulting in Patchi having a hole in his frill as an injury which Alex claims that Patchi is "destined for greatness".
Later, Bulldust moves his herd south as well, but when they try to pass through a forest, they are forced to flee when a storm strikes and a forest fire erupts. Taking advantage of the chaos, a pack of Gorgosaurus attacks the scattered herd.
They kill the rest of Patchi and Scowler's family, while their leader and alpha, Gorgon, fights and kills Bulldust while heβs trying to defend Patchi and Scowler. Afterwards, Patchi's herd, now led by Bulldust's rival Major, combine with Juniper's herd as they continue their migration. Gorgon's pack attacks them again, and in the ensuing chaos, Patchi, Scowler, and Juniper fall into a river and are swept downstream to the ocean, with Alex following them from above.
At a beach, Scowler follows a herd of Edmontosaurus to find food, callously leaving Patchi and Juniper behind. The two make their way through a forest and eventually are able to find their herd and Scowler.
After years of making the same migration from north to south and vice versa, a grown up Scowler becomes the herd's new leader after defeating Major and chooses Juniper to be his mate, much to Patchi's disappointment.
Scowler recklessly leads the herd onto a frozen lake, but Patchi is able to lead the majority of the herd to safety. Enraged and mistakenly believing that Patchi is going to usurp him and try to take Juniper from him, Scowler confronts his brother and challenges him for a battle in exchange for leadership of the herd.
Scowler, as he is much stronger and larger than Patchi, quickly gains the upper hand and defeats his brother by trapping him under a tree before disowning him and ordering Juniper, along with the rest of the herd, to leave Patchi behind.
Despondent and heartbroken, Patchi, now trapped underneath the tree and unable to do anything, attempts to accept his fate by allowing scavengers to kill and eat him, but Alex convinces him to die for something worth dying for, just as his father Bulldust did.
Reinvigorated by the advice, Patchi escapes and fights off the scavengers, before catching up to the herd, and now must prove himself to be the leader his herd deserves.
The story is a complete bore as it's just the typical coming of age story that we've seen a bunch of times before with nothing new or unique added to it. Hell, the idea of a coming of age story with dinosaurs has already been done before with movies like "The Land Before Time" and "Dinosaur", and those were done much better. Also, the movie is severely hampered by the obnoxious voice acting and very unfunny humor.
The action scenes do look pretty awesome and intense, and are among the few interesting things in the movie like the forest fire scene, the Gorgosaurus chasing down Patchi's herd, the herd escaping from the cracking ice, the clash between Patchi and Scowler, and Patchi and the entire herd going up against the Gorgosaurus pack.Β
The movie really lacks any form of heart or charm, again, thanks to the annoying voice acting, and whenever it tries to have a tender or heartfelt moment, they just don't work all because of those stupid voices.
The movie has a very poor sense of humor and not a single joke manages to get a laugh such as the gross-out humor, and the voice overs result in some very weak banter, unfunny remarks, and extremely out of place slang.
The animation is definitely the movie's only saving grace as it looks absolutely phenomenal. And just like "Dinosaur", the movie uses live action settings and blends them very well with the animated characters. The characters and dinosaurs all have incredbly realistic designs and very fluid movements, the live action backgrounds and settings are very pretty to look at, and are greatly utilized, and there are some incredible effects such as the fire, water, lighting, and etc. The only downside is that because of the last-minute voice overs, they didn't have time to animate the dinosaurs mouths to have them talk, so it just looks like they're communicating telepathically.
The characters are all pretty lame as they just boil down to the usual tropes that are common in these kind of movies with nothing interesting about them like Patchi being timid protagonist that's destined to become a great leader, Juniper being the standard love interest, Alex being the comic relief best friend, and not a funny one, and Scowler being the jerky older brother who has some major ego issues, and is easily the most hatable character in the movie.
The voice acting is hands down the worst aspect of the movie as it's clearly just a last minute addition. Yes, "The Land Before Time" and "Dinosaur" added dialogue during production, but those were decisions made in the early stages of development. Here, it was added in very late, and it clearly shows as it sounds like the voice actors just didn't care, and their performances are very poor. Especially the case with Alex and Scowler as their performances are easily the most obnoxious ones. And on top of that, they just don't shut up. Almost every scene has these voice overs.
The music is at least decently composed, and does sound nice, but at the same time, it's nothing we haven't heard before in other dinosaur adventure movies.
Overall, this is easily one of the most annoying animated movies i've ever seen, and it's all thanks to those terrible voiceovers. If they weren't included, then this would be a much more tolerable movie, and we did eventually get that with the Cretaceous Cut, a.k.a. the Shut Up! Cut. But with the theatrical cut, just avoid it and stick with "The Land Before Time", "Jurassic Park", or the original "Walking with Dinosaurs" TV series if you want your dino fix.
