NOTE/UPDATE: This reference is out of date as well as some of the information on this profile (gender identity in particular). For Barley's new and improved reference and box profile, click here!

Spent most of last night and this morning sketching and drawing this scarecrow-kid. And you know what? It was totally worth it!

Submitting this to EverAfterHigh 's OC contest, his bio and info is down below:

~Barley~

Parent’s Story: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz  and select sequels - Article on the Scarecrow: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarecro…
Roommate:  [N/A]
Secret Heart’s Desire: To go on a gratefully grand adventure to a place I have forgotten the name of! And to get brains, of course. Maybe they will help me remember.
My “Magic” Touch: Nothing much hurts and I hardly get tired, so I must be made of magic! Right?
Storybook Romance Status: There is plenty of corn in the field, but smarts are better than hearts I think.
"Oh Curses" Moment: I have a secret: The only thing I’m afraid of? A lit match. And the dark.
Favorite Subject: Any class I can learn from, and that’s pretty much most of them!
Least Favorite Subject: Those chem-Myth-stry labs could use a little less flames, and lunch gets boring when you can’t really eat.
Best Friends Forever After: Any Ozian is a friend of mine! And then some. I really like people. They’re very informative.

~About~

Optimistic, curious, and a wee bit naive. An understandable state of mind for a newly made scarecrow, what isn't worth trying when everything is new? Barley may not be the most well-learned student, but hey – you might not be either if the first weeks of your life were spent tied to a pole, staring aimlessly out into a cornfield near the spiraling Yellow Brick, all while crows peck and make fun of your very existence because they have enough sentience to realize that a brainless hunk of hay and cloth cannot in fact harm them...

But would someone like himself have the brains to admit he was lonely? Not quite. He's likely oblivious to the fact that he felt this way before attending Ever After High, as he has taken the ordeal with an unusual sense of stride. Either way, Barley is a sociable scarecrow with a will to learn.

Is he brighter than he seems? Well, perhaps only time can tell.

~Royal or Rebel~

Both literally speaking and alignment-wise, Barley is a Royal. The former is due to the fact that, at the end of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz , the Wizard appoints the Scarecrow as ruler of the Emerald City. If only to be overthrown and eventually become Queen Ozma's most trusted adviser, but still a part of her reign in later books nonetheless. As for the latter: In spite of not quite having a clear picture of what his destiny is like, what Barley does know he is pretty excited about. There's also the possibility that he longs for the companionship his so-called Munchkin dad never gave him, but that's a subconscious thought that has yet dawned to him.

If he were to have theoretically lived a human-length lifespan Barely would more likely support the Rebel cause, but as of now? It's safe to say that he might feel uncomfortable with the idea of a certain trio of his future iconic companions not wanting to fulfill what their destiny has in mind. Hypocritically, he doesn't seem to mind (nor necessarily care) if others go against the tide.

~Brief history/family things~

Technically speaking, Barley is not the biological nor adopted child of the Scarecrow from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels. He is Scarecrow’s successor however, and they both share a similar conception: Constructed by two Munchkin farmers, all while gaining sentience. Scarecrow, having the smarts to be critical, was especially skeptical of the idea that the Land of Oz would cease to exist under certain circumstances. After all, why would such a beloved tale need to be retold by a younger generation of Ozians?

So one day, sometime earlier in the year, a rich (if somewhat impatient) Munchkin farmer by the name of Boq decided to take things into his own hands. Acquiring the Power of Life (a substance introduced in The Marvelous Land of Oz ) via unexplained means, he used it on a scarecrow he’d helped to construct with the farmer who owned the cornfield nearby. Said cornfield-owning farmer meant for the aforementioned scarecrow to be used to scare the crows targeting the field in question. and it wasn’t until the day after that he noticed the (presumed inanimate) lifeform struggling to slip out of the post ‘it’ was tied to. But of course, the now living scarecrow didn’t considered himself as an ‘it’, and that was exactly how Barley came to be.

Currently speaking, the Scarecrow of Oz acts as more of a mentor than a father to the straw-stuffed teen. Having settled on letting his straw-stuffed protege live with the field-farmer, Scarecrow takes the time to check in on Barley and the farmer’s family a few times a week (when Barley is back in Oz, at least). Visitations aside, however, Barley more often than not dwells upon the same, shoddily propped up post in the middle of the cornfield, the very one he once tried to escape from. Although the young scarecrow considers the cornfield farmer his dad, said farmer wants nothing to do with him.

In fact, anyone with enough sense would question Barley’s logic. Really, most would question why a man who uses scarecrow-duty as an excuse to ignore his “kid” would actively want to raise him. A man who doesn’t particularly care that said “kid” is not too fond of staying outside at nighttime and would rather seek shelter than dangle on a pole with nearly no means of escape.

~Amusing notes~

--- I wasn't exactly sure at first whether to make him look like an EAH-styled human with cloth-like skin or make him cartoonishly humanoid, so I may or may not have had Hoodude in mind throughout the design process.

--- The crows back in Oz, who are not too fond of being fooled with stuffed placebos (and are probably not too happy that the last Scarecrow killed 40 crows under the control of the Wicked Witch Of The West), have been known to tease and undermine him for lacking a brain. They have also been known to use his not quite as keen eyesight/exceptional hearing to their advantage, taunting and scaring the wicked out of him during those lonely Munchkin nights strung above the cornfield. Although he doesn't know it is the crows' doing, this unfortunately is the main reason that his fear persists.

---Barley doesn't have an official last name, simply because, as a scarecrow, who really needs one? However, when one is required, he'll either write "scarecrow" or "hayman" in front of his name. Using both interchangeably has gotten him into one or two amusing mixups.

---Barley loves to read, a fact that not everyone would suspect at first glance. He's the kind of guy who plows through dictionaries, encyclopedias, and nonfiction books for fun. If he were to suddenly surprise someone with random facts or in-depth knowledge on an oddly specific subject, then this is probably the reason why. He's a pinch socially inept, but is surprisingly bright.

---He likes to collects pins. He's especially fond of safety pins. Don't as why, he just likes them.

XD I know, right? He's the kind of guy who assumes everyone is his friend until proving guilty. Gotta love scarecrows, mang.

And FFFFFFFF SOMEONE GOT THE REFERENCE CAN I MARRY YOU. Seriously though, I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers how the Wizard gave gave the Scarecrow a "Bran" new brain/secured it with pin needles. Even though I'd only read the book less than a month ago but shhhhhhh, no one can tell~

Yep~ Barley can be a little slow (at times he can be a bit literal-minded for example), but he means well. ^^

The things we do for fairy tale parents. xD

Heee, thanks!  His hat was based off the original illustrations from when the book was first published, though I decided to make it a little less tall. It was a fun and interesting challenge to design him. :3
