Description When I first saw you
You were alive and real
In your natural state
So I, overwhelmed by your beauty
Tried to compress you,
To preserve you between the pages
So that you would always stay the same
Months later, and all the leaves are gone
The ground underfoot carpeted with parched brown ghosts
I open the book and find you
Still flame-hued, still defiant
But now you are brittle
Behind your vermilion and daring
I find you easily broken, hiding
Your shell is still the same,
But I can’t feel your spirit now
The defiance I loved is now aimed at me
I begin to wish I had let you go
Allowed you to lose the beauty I saw
Rather than compromise your truth
I couldn’t keep you, after all
I hold you up to the light
Simulating former glories
The idealistic perfection I saw
But you can’t respond to sun
I don’t know what it was I expected from you
