Description
A year or so back I played a Red version nuzlocke on the virtual console. It included one of my most difficult rulesets - set style, no healing items EVER (no not even during the Elite Four). And yet, it was a completely deathless run! I don't know if that magic will ever happen again, but it was a great run!
And a great team! I tried to use Pokemon that I'd never used before (except my starter, since I've used all Kanto starters at some point). Somehow I'd never gotten around to using a Jolteon nor an Arcanine up until this point, despite those pokes being fan-favorites. The Mew I used was not through the Mew glitch. It was an event Pokemon that was available in Japan for the virtual console, and I couldn't pass up using an actual legitimate Mew in a run.
So here is my champion team:
Sakura the Venusaur, lvl 66, mega drain, growth, leech seed, razor leaf
Choco the Wigglytuff, lvl 67, toxic, rest, body slam, bubblebeam
Oshou the Farfetch'd, lvl 67, fly, slash, sword dance, cut
Eon the Jolteon, lvl 67, double kick, thunder wave, thunderbolt, pin missile
Hanashi the Arcanine, lvl 67, hyper beam, dragon rage, flamethrower, dig
Myuu the Mew, lvl 68, rock slide, softboiled, ice beam, psychic
Some game notes if you're interested:
- This was a Japanese version of the game. "Oshou" is the nickname given to the traded Farfetch'd in Japanese. I couldn't nickname Mew because it was an event Pokemon, so they were stuck with the Japanese name "Myuu", which is basically the same thing.
- "Hanashi" means "toothless" in Japanese, so yes, I named my Arcanine after the dragon from How to Train your Dragon.
- This was one of the first times I tried out other battle strategies since I COULD NOT HEAL. So I had to use moves I'd normally pass up on, like stat-boosting moves or healing moves.
- Myuu helped a lot during the E4 when I had restricted all healing items. I taught them Softboiled, which can be used out of battle to heal your other team members at the cost of the user's HP. By using Softboiled wisely, I could redistribute some of the health throughout the team during gameplay. I really made use of their ability to learn all TMs and gave them various moves for type coverage.
- Oshou the Farfetch'd was surprisingly helpful. I taught him Sword Dance and he swept through a lot of teams with that. At one point, however, I forgot about the traded Pokemon not listening to you thing, and I did some gameplay out of order, so when I went to go battle Erika, he stopped listening to me mid-battle and I got really confused for a second. Luckily, his move pool was decent enough that he still beat through most of Erika's team despite not listening to me half the time.
- Choco was your classic toxic-rest stall Pokemon.
- I can see why people like Jolteon and Arcanine. Eon was a very versatile speedy attacker, and Hanashi was friggin BEAST!!!
- I love the Bulbasaur line and even though I decided to use Pokemon I'd never used before, I had to give myself my favorite starter. I for once utilized "Growth" to boost Venusaur's special stat, which with Gen 1 mechanics, is really OP.
- As my first (and probably only) deathless nuzlocke run, and due to the fact that I used a bunch of fun Pokemon that I'd never gotten to use before, this playthrough will always have a special place in my heart.

Yeah, even I couldn't believe it! It's also the only time I've done a completely no items nuzlocke. Not sure if I ever want to do something like that again - don't want to push my luck too much haha
Thank you! This team is very near and dear to my heart. I'm so glad they all made it

Thanks a bunch!
I love old-timey color palettes, but this is my first time attempting to use them, so I'm glad I was able to pull it off!
Yeah, Wigglytuff was surprisingly fun! I've only ever used Wigglytuff and Clefairy once each; the latter is probably more tanky and easier for nuzlocke usage I've found.

I did few deadthless run too
but ironically while it is supposedly a good thing sinc eyou get to use the best mon and show your skill as a nuzlocker,
Somehow a deathless run feels less like a nuzlocke to me U-_-

That makes sense though. It's also not the best "story" if you're doing a comic based on it either, haha.

I don't think I've ever heard of a deathless run before, that is damn impressive.
This image is giving me all the nostalgia. Those glitchy ancient games are always going to hold a special place in my heart.Β
Farfetch'd is a surprisingly decent Pokemon in that game, the Swords Dance really puts him ahead of the other two birds. I love the under-utilized Pin Missile in Gen 1, and you cannot ever go wrong with an Arcanine.
Oooh! Have you heard about the Toxic-Leech Seed combo? Venusaur's the most common Pokemon to get it, since it naturally gets Leech Seed and it's pretty bulky and defensive as Grass types go. So, you apply Toxic, then Leech Seed, and as Toxic scales, SO DOES LEECH SEED. It gets hilariously broken, especially against trainers who throw heals at their Pokemon, because the damage increase is exponential every turn.

I think I had heard of a deathless run before, but I was never sure if I could do it.
I totally agree, the old games are so nostalgic for me and I love them! I was at just the right age when Pokemon first came out.
I have heard of the Toxic-Leech Seed combo. I think I decided against doing that in favor of having a more balanced team and to give my Wigglytuff something to do. That or maybe I didn't know about it at the time of playing this game... I'm not sure, it was a few years ago... Either way, that combo is so OP!

Yeah, crits are super common in the old games, so that's a danger when playing nuzlockes. Also whether a move is physical or special is dependent on typeΒ in the old games. Psychic types are kind of OP. The AI is sometimes weird... There's a lot of unpredictability in the gen 1 games that leads to their difficulty in nuzlockes. But somehow, I've had the least trouble with gen 1 'lockes. I think it's simply because I've played the games so often that I know what to expect. If you do decide to do a nuzlocke for gen 1 - good luck!

I see.
Oof, yeah, then you are in for some big surprises with the gen 1 games!
For example here is a list of weird mechanics that will really throw you off that I'd recommend you reading before you attempt a Gen 1 run - www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/commeβ¦
Also, these two things were not mentioned, but are also probably important:
- Bug is super effective against Poison, and visa versa
- the only actual Dragon and Ghost type moves are Dragon Rage and Night Shade, so any hopes of using a super effective Dragon or Ghost type move is non-existant (actually, there IS Lick... but it's Lick so it sucks)
I love the gen 1 games, but they are super janky!
I'll say again - Good luck!

Yeah, I have no idea how everyone survived. Gen 1 crits are insane! Though that often worked to my favor with my Venusaur's Razor Leaf and my Farfetch'd's Slash. As long as I was the one dealing the crits, it was okay heh heh

Everyone being good boys'n girls here. ^_^ Hanashi is such a cool name I might have to steal use it some day.
This reminds me of a brutal run I wen through myself recently, being a Y-version run where I could only catch and use Dark Types (or those that eventually become one). I was originally just wondering if it was possible, and while running through the possibilities I realized that there were so few Dark Types but with just enough variety that it seemed interesting so I just went for it. Long story short, there were indeed enough secondary types showing up at just the right times that it was just possible. Best part is nobody died. Here's the final team I ended up with: Faye the Greninja, who pretty much had to do everything by herself until just after Lumiose City because there weren't any other Dark Types. Poor girl.
Rita the Pangoro, who was absolutely necessary against Korrina's two Lucario and later the Mega Gyarados. A powerhouse for sure.
Cassandra the Absol, who despite having a not so good nature (quiet) ended up being one of the deadliest on the team thanks to Super Luck. By the end of the game every attack was a guaranteed crit due to the way critical hits work in gen VI onward.
Dingo the Krookodile, the only dude on the team who didn't need Moxie to be a true force to be reckoned with (he had Intimidate instead).
Chloe the Skuntank, and the star of the show. She's the only reason I was able to survive all the Fighting Types and pretty much made this whole run possible. She also took out the Grass and Fairy Gyms on her own, too. I'll never underestimate Skuntank again, haha.
Kurda the Bisharp, and another major reason this run was possible in the first place. I added her just so I could deal with Mega Gardevoir and was not disappointed.
I don't really remember much else from the run; I didn't take notes except on the final team and whatnot so this won't be the protagonist and team of a Nuzlocke anytime soon.

Thanks! (and I encourage you to do so)
That's really awesome! A monotype locke sounds difficult. But you can definitely do that with X/Y. Your team sounds beautiful and amazing! I certainly can attest to Krookodile and Bisharp's awesomeness. Bisharp is one of my favorite Pokemon! And I've used Krookodile in a 'locke before as well. Power Trip is an intense move.
Once while playing an X version nuzlocke with a friend, I decided that for a section of the game I'd just randomly gather together a bunch of dark types that I'd happened to catch and ran with that to beat the Psychic type gym. My team included Absol, Houndoom, Pangoro, Bisharp, Sneasel, and Drapion, and I loved them all so much! I'd love to do an entire run with that kind of team. That's amazing that you got through a monotype run with no deaths! Good on you and your team!

There were definitely some hairy moments in the run, especially the cave of doom Reflection Cave and those couple of Fighting-users in it. (That's actually why I refer to it as the "Cave of Doom," because even outside of the type-locke run they tend to be tricky to deal with...Throh and Sawk are the woooorst when you have to fight them. DX) Anyway getting a Stunky was pretty much the dealmaker for attempting this in the first place. Without one I don't think the run would have been possible because of all the Fighting-types. You definitely have to think and stay on your toes a lot when doing that sort of run, planning around weaknesses like that, always thinking "Okay, does that PokΓ©mon know any moves my entire team is weak to?"
If I had the chance to get a Houndour I probably would have kept it 'til the end because Houndoom is one of my favorite PokΓ©mon. Seeing the team I ended up with, though, I just know it would have been pretty different. The girls and one guy I ended up with were stellar and I definitely will remember them for a while. Who knows, they might end up in one of my stories sometime.

Reflection Cave is the cave of doom for like, every X/Y nuzlocker! I hate that place :/ That fighting/psychic duo and the Wobbufettes are terrifying.
Houndoom are fun Pokes, but kind of glass-cannons if you're not careful.

that's cool. ^.^ a lagenamit mew make the run so much more special. not many can say the did that. lol.
Gen one os one of the easier games to Nuzlock. mostly because of how old it is, and the many glitches and exploits people can use. (like the mew glitch for one lol)
one of my friends is doing what he calls a "Generation lock." basically you play Gen 1 as normal. keeping track of every pokemon you catch and use. then you move on to gen 2. the catch, you can catch the same pokemon you used in gen 1.Β
(example, if you catch a pidgey and caterpi in gen 1 put only use the pidgey, you cant use a pidgey going forward. but since you didnt use the caterpi in gen 1 you can still use it in the next game.)
so far he's made it to gen 6 and has had to use some very weird teams lol.

jadethestone In reply to PinkTheDinosaur [2020-01-29 02:48:14 +0000 UTC]
Huh, interesting - I've actually heard a lot of people say that Gen 1 is harder to nuzlocke, mostly because Critical Hits were a lot more common in those early games and a lot of glitches often work against you. But somehow I do tend to have better luck in earlier games for whatever reason than later games (some of my worst nuzlocke attempts were with the Gen 7 games).
I will say that I never used any glitches or exploits for this run.
A generation locke sounds pretty great actually! I'd love to do something like that! I like trying out Pokemon I've never used before!
