Description
[Van Kleiss and the Generator Rex cartoon show belong to Man of action and Cartoon network]this should probably be in scraps but I don't care.
In fact, even though this is WIP, I'm going to share it with the fangroups [if they'll allow it] because that's the most likely place for it to be see by people who can give useful feedback.
The sketch version before coloring looks much better...

I LOVE lineart. coloring is tricky and often doesn't make things better
but I still find coloring fascinating, so I imagine someone else might. Color really changes the feel of the image, completely and in unexpected ways.
which colors I choose, also, changes it completely ...
I just roughed in some approximate colors to get a feel for what colors I want to use and what challenges I will face. textures [and I don't mean the pre-made kind, I don't use those] will be a challenge, for example, the metallic gold hand will have to be distinguished from the vine more though texture and shading than through color, because the colors will be similar.
I'm not sure what color his coat really is, in the show it never looks red to me but people draw it reddish all the time. I'll have to do some research on that. also need to do some reveiw on fabric folds, anf for the background look at some general backgroud pictures of Abysus...
and I need to draw a cherry blossom tree. I've never drawn one.
there's something about color, even rough color, that brings a picture to life. I love color, and it frustrates me that I don't yet have the skill to do it well. I will try to remember that as I work on learning those skills to color this.
all feedback and suggestions very welcome
WHAT'S WRONG WITH THI PICTURE???--please tell me. I need constructive criticism more than praise at this stage of the game.
[praise is ok too though...or just your own thought on VK or Gen Rex in general or color in general. ANYTHING]

I think this is a great piece.
Coloring linearts takes practice, it's okay.
I also have problems with folds in clothes so it's okay. Yours are better than mine.
VK's jacket is actually in the red section but it's a very greyish red. I pick out all my colors from the character design things, so if you need to see I've got some stuff in my gallery.
Too lazy to go through and find you a ref.
but yeah, overall I do like this. Color does add interest to a picture.

thank you very much for all your feedback and encoouragement. I've now also colored this with pencils, and I used red and black for the jacket.
what are "character design things?" ...like the pictures of the chars by their bios on the cartoon network website?...I don't fully trust that because the picture of VK on there is backwards. If I wanna see how something is I watch videos, mostly.
yeah I'm lazy like that too...so far I have not looked at any reference whatsoever on this...lol
thanks again

No problem.
Yeah by "character design things" I mean the official pictures on CN. The eyedropper tool is just amazing.

Yeah, I sort of forgot about the eyedropper tool for that, but that's a great Idea. I didn't have photoshop for a few years, so I didn't color digital, and I forgot lots of the tricks like that. thanks for reminding me.

so this is digital art right? did you use a tablet? they make things easier. and some good programs to use are paint tool sai, gimp, and photoshop.
if you want to color it traditionally, my favorite meduim is colored pencils because they aren't messy (like crayons or markers) and easy to erase...
yeah, just some advice~

thanks
this is a pen sketch scanned edited ad then digitally colored.
Actually I do want to color it traditionally but I'm chicken. I don't want to ruin the original. I think I might print a copy and try it that way first. and I was thinking of using color pencils, so I'll have a look at your gallery and see what you do.
for this I used the touchpad, but I do have an old tablet, which I will use also when I start trying to color details and shading and such. I'm not very good with the tablet yet.
thank you very much for the advice.

I have now printed off three copies on my scanner copier. It came out very well, looking just like the original, so I can practice traditional color media with no risk. thanks again for inspiring me to try that
