Rookfrost is a hardworking individual who cannot seem to sit still for long. He works tirelessly to complete his tasks and rarely, if ever, leaves projects half-finished. In fact, he tends to hyper-focus on his endeavors, rendering him incapable of multitasking until the job has reached its utmost completion. Furthermore, his resolution to every problem is to distract himself with his work, effectively enabling him to run away from problems through it. But, hey--at least he is a productive escapist! Where he is lacking in physical prowess, he makes up for in cunning. Exceedingly clever and keenly aware of his own intelligence, Rookfrost can be rather pompous and arrogant. He often reflect on his "superior wit", finding his peers to be less mentally capable and therefore beneath him. He is, however, faithful and devoted to the Nara clan and to his few friends. His loyalty is unshakable, oftentimes it is borderline suffocating.
The tom is an eccentric fellow, possessing many quirks and peculiar ways of thinking. He is always glancing over his shoulder, believing that he is being followed or watched. He has a knack for conspiracy theories, firmly subscribing to the idea that everyone is out to get him. Perhaps this is but a manifestation of his innate narcissism, but regardless of the origin, the behavior leaves him riddled with severe paranoia. As to be expected, Rookfrost is also very cynical and mistrustful. He only seems to trust himself--not even his kin and close companions meet the requirement necessary to earn his complete trust. His pessimistic view on the world has lead him to believe that anyone could betray him--a concept that rules nearly all his decisions and behaviors. As a result, Rookfrost struggles cultivating and maintaining relationships in any capacity. Still, despite this, Rookfrost deeply yearns for intimacy and is often left feeling dissatisfied and misunderstood. And his jealous nature leaves him green with envy whenever he sees other felines happy with friends and lovers. He has a gift for holding grudges; once spurned, he rarely forgives and never forgets. He is also particularly petty and refuses to let others forget that they have wronged him, resorting to passive aggressive tactics to convey his displeasure.
History
Jayflight and Minnowtail were very unconventional parents. When Jayflight discovered that she was expecting his kits, she was distraught for they had not received permission from the nobility before conceiving. The pair held no genuine love for each other, but in order to save their skins, they sought a formal audience with Halcyon to ask permission to have a litter. They might have lied about the timing, for Jayflight was already expecting, but it seemed to only be a white lie--no harm no foul. And if they were denied... well... they would deal with it later. Fortunately for the young couple, Halcyon gave them permission to conceive a litter. Neither were prepared to become parents, and their relationship quickly soured. Minnowtail did not want her as a mate nor did he want to be a father to her kits. Eventually he distanced himself from her and their soon-to-be-born kits. The queen resented him for it and made her disgust known as soon as her kits were old enough to listen. She gave birth to a pair of sons, naming Rookkit for his dark pelt which resembled the birds' feathers.
Jayflight was far from motherly. She filled their ears with unsavory comments about to their absent father, hoping to instill her own hate into their hearts. She was exceedingly dismissive and short-tempered with her kits, channeling her bad moods into verbal assaults. His harsh, loveless upbringing began to shape the young tomkit. He quickly lost his naive innocence, becoming a cold and suspicious youth. While Jayflight treated them equally (albeit terribly), Rookkit always believed she favored Merlinkit over him. He seemed to have inherited her resentful nature, for he came to resent his brother. Still, Merlinkit was all he had. That was until they befriended another kit. Doublekit was a few moons older, but he would entertain the brothers' company. Even when he went into apprenticeship, he would occasionally visit the pair to teach them what he had learned during his training.
The three were finally reunited when Rookkit and Merlinkit were give mentors and begun their own training. Rookkit was given to a prickly explorer named Brightbriar. The two quarreled often, but Rookpaw flourished beneath her tutorage. He was a fast-learner and his success nurtured his pride and confidence. While he remained a scrawny, gangly youth who was not physically impressive in the slightest, Rookpaw relished in his intellectual prowess. He liked to think himself mighty clever, his ego bolstered at every achievement and every utterance of praise. Brightbriar was less than pleased with her apprentice's growing narcissism. Their arguments grew more frequent and severe. Rookpaw had come to believe that she was holding him back, that he was ready to graduate and become a fully fledged Explorer. Eventually he would get his wish, as one day while they were on an exploration together, Brightbriar met her untimely demise. While navigating the treacherous mountains, Brightbriar had grown careless of where she was placing her paws. Perhaps she was distracted by a quarrel with her apprentice, or maybe it was a result of fatigue beneath the blazing sun. Either way, the rocks gave way beneath her weight and she fell to her death, buried by the fallen stones. Neither mentor nor apprentice returned and eventually search parties were sent out. They found Rookpaw amongst the wreckage, struggling to dig his mentor out of the rubble.
A few days later, Rookpaw was given his warrior name. He was declared Rookfrost, in honor of his cold, calculating, and logical nature. His life as an explorer continued for moons, life among the Nara being particularly uneventful. He was aware of the whispers--once that spoke of rebellion against the nobility, but Rookfrost did not want to be involved. The Explorer was content with his mundane life of servitude, it mattered little who was presiding over him--they were all cogs in a machine. Ever cynical, he felt freedom was a lie; there would always be someone on top spitting on those down below. The only thing that changed was the name of who was doing the spitting. While he remained disinterested and apathetic towards the brewing storm, he was jarred when their leader, Branch, was executed. Now they had his attention. His paranoia, which had always been a dull itch at the back of his mind, began to fester. Double took their former leader's place, causing Rookfrost to avoid his old friend like the plague. As far as he was concerned, Double now had a target on his back, and the explorer did not want to get mixed up with bloody politics.
