I think this is a long-eared chipmunk (Tamias quadrimaculatus), but chipmunk identification is tricky. There are nine chipmunk species living in the California part of the Sierra Nevada.

Apparently the recommended scientific method for identifying a chipmunk is to look at the penis bone. This isn’t really much use for photographic identification.
