Description

Taking the orange, white, and blue of the Dutch founders of New Amsterdam, later New York, the New York state flag draws on history. The torch of liberty symbolizes freedom, democracy, and the Statue of Liberty in the harbor. New York's flag, with it's emphasis on the city, was introduced following the split between Upstate and the southern section consisting of the NYC metro area, some suburban counties, and Long Island. New York got to keep the name, but lost Albany, building a new Capitol on Staten Island.
