Triton is both the name for the son of the Greco-Roman Olympian God Poseidon and the Goddess/Nereid/Oceanid/Sea Nymph Amphitrite, as well as for sea gods/demigods of similar form in Classical Myth. There are many terms that have been used as titles for merman or mermaid like characters: Nereid, Oceanid, Naiad, Undine, Triton, Selkie, Merrow, Siren, Rusalka, Nixies/Necks/Nokken/Nicor, Fossegrim/Stromkarlen, Ningyo, etc.
