Description
Convention Season is coming! Looks like I’ll be at Chibi Chibi Con next month, Emerald City and Sakuracon in March and Stumptown (with Emma Capps!) in April!- So back before the end of the year I read a review of Modest Medusa. The review was pretty fair, but the guy really didn’t like my art and described it as lazy. Sigh… sometimes I can be lazy, especially if I’m in a hurry. Then, about two weeks ago while I was at Newcon I met someone after my panel who told me that I had no business being on a webcomics panel because I clearly didn’t know how to draw at all, and my comic was one of the worst out there. That hurt. Finally, last week I discovered a webcomics review site that had some negative things to say about my comic. Some of them were really pretty valid, like criticsim about the poor site design and the number of adds (and I’m working with a friend to change both of those things). And again, they didn’t like the art.
So…
I thought I’d really push myself on this story arc and do the best pages I can do. Which is why they’ve been taking longer than normal. I’m really happy with the way they’ve turned out and I hope you like them as well. I’m not fishing for compliments here. Instead, my plan for this year is to bring my ” A game” to every Modest Medusa page.

your art is just perfect. What entitled wankers like those folk mean to say is "But that's not the way I wanted it to be." (I challenge you to not hear a squeaky whine in that). To which I can only muster feelings that translate roughly as 'Congratulations, you are now aware of the fact that the world is not built to meet you personal desires.'
As somebody who made a couple web comics for a year and then just didn't see the point in continuing until I could devote the time to it more reliably and do it for the story to be told.
I'd have liked to know more than two people even knew they existed. But I'm not sure I'd have lasted that long if people had be jerks about it.

Thanks. You know, it's funny how you can do something and think no one is aware of it. before MM I did a fantasy comic and I was sure no one was reading it. Every now and then though someone tells me that they liked it and asks if I'll ever finish it. So that's nice.

Is it my imagination or is this "Medusa" a little older?

The plot thickens ... this could be an older generation Medusa, or perhaps a glimpse into the future. In either case, I better let you get on with the story rather than distract you with questions.

Boo and sucky to hear about the negativity, but then again there's always Pros and Cons in life right? It may be our "cup of tea" but certainly not for those guys. Not trying to sound rude to the other "parties" but it's their lost if they didn't like/couldn't get into MM and also they can stop reading it and not be troll-haters about it.
Let's see, I've totally been where you have been Jake, in my drawings but mostly in my writing I'll do really good and I'll have a lot of supporters telling me they love my Ego-fanfic story but then I'll get a couple of "criticism review" (from time to time) and it'll shoot me down into the slump in a heartbeat. Even though I'll be brooding over that review, but about a week or two later I turn it around and take their criticism review to push myself to make it better by improving. Which is what you are doing, so kudos to ya man! Keep it up and do what makes YOU feel better, even if you have to adjust some things to make it happen.
As for art style, you know that I'm an artist myself, so an artist to another artist, I like your style when we became friends. Before you started MM, I saw your gallery with Panty Explosion arts and I really enjoy the simple gist of it. Like you got the portion and lighting/shading and even backgrounds. I wish at times I can do quick drawing/coloring style like you it's takes me FOREVER to do an art piece and that's including line art too -__-
I usually don't read webcomics but the few that I did, had the simple style art. If too much is going on, one can lose interest and/or be really distracted to the strip plotline, ya know? Don't get me wrong, I know there are others that LOVE the whole shebang in a strip panel but then there are others like us that like it simple and straight to the point. MM season 1, the simplest totally work because of the puns/jokes you were trying to get across, so really you didn't need an-oh-so-awesome background and stuff. But going into season 2 and 3 I think one of the reasons those "reviewers" might be criticizing it as "lazy" (besides you rushing it due to lack of time) is probably because season 2 & 3 is now an adventure so they are expecting more details or something? That's just me giving them the benefit of the doubt oooor they're just douchebags...hehehe, the word douchebags makes me giggle
Anyways, I've been with you before MM started and comparing strip 1 to now, you have improved a lot in your style ^. ~b
Alrighty, this Neko-Panda has written enough and should go to bed in order to go to work in a few hours, haha. But before I goooo...

The drawers falls in the depression by the critiques the mayority of the times, is very important continue the job don´t care the negatives commentaries of peoples, include the commentaries of your own family, if you are don´t confortable by sumbit your are in a forum where your autoestime is damaged, search other forums (this was my case 4 years ago), and continue your work until your finished all the comic, and continued publishing more comics.

If I may be honest in saying, I wasnt that attached to the art style in the beginning, but it grew on me the more I read, and I adore it now so very much. it's definitely come a long way from where it started, especially how much love and work you've put into this. The colors, the backgrounds, everything is fantastic, and every new character is better than the last. I've been following this comic for a while and I've love every strip. I cannot wait to see how it progresses from here. <3

Thanks! A comment like that makes a lot of sense to me. I'm glad you stuck around and I'm glad that the art either grew on you or changed to the point where you liked it more. That's great. I mean, I wouldn't expect everyone to do that either. Often when I read a comic and it doesn't grab me right away I just put it down and move on to something else. I know I'm not always giving every comic a fair chance, but there's a lot of stuff out there to try! On the other hand, I don't send criticism to artists and writers just because I don't like their comic.

Aaah I absolutely understand putting something down that doesn't grab me, there's one certain webcomic that didn't grab me at first and took quite a long time reading it before I could grasp why it was so loved before falling in love myself. I put it down the first time and didnt touch it again until a friend urged me to continue.
It's a shame they don't like MM because it's adorable and has developed into a very interesting storyline from the original cute four paneled comics. still, I have no gauge on how harsh their critiques were but i could see how the art might be an issue to some; its not uncommon in both comics and other art forms in general.(the previous comic I mentioned gets a lot of slander for how its work is styled)
it's a very lovely style that immediately shows to me that its yours, and its developed quite a lot since the very first comic. I love it extremely more than some of the other webcomics I've seen, especially those that use stick figures and sprites ripped from games.
(I apologize for the large amount of text)

No need to apologize!
I never mind when people tell me that can't get into the comic. Not everything is for everyone. It's when someone says something like "It's stupid"... well, now I'm just repeating myself. Oh well!
Anyway, thanks for the kind words!

There's a lot of people who don't understand simple art
it pisses me off because art doesn't get much simpler than mine without becoming stick figures..
I'm thinking these are the sort of people who can't appreciate retro pixel games and refuse to play anything that could run on the average computer

I think in some cases that's exactly what it is. For some other people, they just see something they don't like and decide to make a big deal about it. I also think that some people have a pretty high standard. They want the best of the best, and anything less ust isn't worth their time. Which is fine, but there's no reason to be a jerk about it.

If you're art isn't extremely detailed, it really just tends to add to the mood of the particular strip, or make it more funny (loved those sheep). I like these pages, but I like them just as much as the funny ones you seemed to do in more of a rush.

JakeRichmond In reply to LastType40 [2013-01-16 20:52:31 +0000 UTC]
That's fine. I mean, I like hearing that. Sometimes (like the last week or so) I just want to draw the hell out of the pages. Sometimes something simpler and quicker is more satisfying and appropriate. And sometimes I screw them both up! My real regret is that when I do really screw up a page I almost never have time to go back and redo it.

That's ridiculous. D: Like Kagehinoryu said every artist has their own style. I've always liked Medusa's design and I love the style that you draw her in. It makes her more adorable. And to say that you can't draw so you shouldn't be doing panels... That's just incredibly rude.
On another note, your backgrounds alone on your latest pages are great! I really love how you drew Medusa's place. *w* All the details and everything.

Art isn't the only important part of a comic. I follow several different webcomics with art that ranges from "OMG, why aren't you working for Marvel or DC?" to "doodles a middle schooler could do". The art is not why I enjoy any of them. It is the story, the characters, and the universe the artist has made. I enjoy Modest Medusa because I love your characters and the story isn't something I've seen millions of times before. Modest Medusa is one of my favorite webcomics. I am so glad that I found it. I like your art style because it is unique. It isn't an anime rip off, nor does it look like classic cartoon art. It is special, just like everything else about your comic.

kagehinoryu [2013-01-16 18:57:10 +0000 UTC]
I don't think many of those are valid criticisms. Every artist has their own style. Part of the reason I keep reading is that your character design is fairly cute and rounded, and I like it. Just take their words as a reminder that not everyone likes your comics, but you can't please everyone. So keep up the good work.
And that person at the panel can go suck a lemon-nade. That was just rude of him/her.

Nice gallery! I'm not a huge Dark Angels fan (I played Space Wolves back in 2nd edition, so I hold a grudge)but I really liked the models from the Dark Vengeance box. The new stuff is kind of hit or miss for me though. Some of it I like, some of it seems too cartoony for 40K (in my opinion). But... I'm totally glad that DA players are happy and finally getting a lot of stuff to really differentiate their army from vanilla marines!
