Description - I may or may not be at Kumoricon in Portland this weekend. I've come down with the flu and i'm feeling awful, so I may have to skip the show.

I like where this is going. Sorry to hear you've gotten sick. Lots of people getting ill lately, though with different stuff. @_@

I have a small point to make... pedant that I am.  The arrow your young shepherd has notched is a broad-bladed hunting arrow, it's characteristic arrow-shaped head designed to create a large, bleeding wound, and prevent the arrow from falling out.  Arrows used against men in armour are designed differently.  A hunting arrow doesn't concentrate enough force against armour to penetrate and will probably bounce harmlessly off.  So in war, archers carry armour piercing arrows that I think were called "bodkins."  They were long, slender heads, with a sharp point, usually square in cross section.  The point would get into a ring of chain mail, and the square shape would break the ring.  Or it would just punch through plate if the angle was favourable.  Of course, a shepherd would probably not be carrying bodkins -- unless he really is serious about protecting the roads as well as his sheep.  Then he might keep a few in his quiver.

Isn't his primary mission to get Modest to her aunt?  Wouldn't drawing attention to yourself be a bad idea and an excellent way of failing that mission? It's his job to protect towns and keep the roads safe sure but there's no shortage of monsters in this world... this seems like a rash decision.

Popping a single enemy is fine... to keep them from summoning reinforcements.. but 3 with unknown abilities.. and Modest isn't a fighter... she's likely to panic or run away during combat. He didn't even know she was the prince's heir... i can appreciate why he wasn't told that, but still...engaging an enemy of unknown strength even if they're unaware... hope he's a good shot.

I see this ending badly.

dude. You're a damn Shepard. Your job is to look after sheep and that's pretty much it.  I think you're thinking of town guard, who's job it is to protect the town.

A shepherd looks after his flock.  You assume that the sheep alone make up his flock.

Fair enough, but I think at that point we're talking more metaphor and less actual job description.

That's assuming the class description of a shepherd in Yeld is the same as the job description of a shepherd in our world.  Somehow I'm thinking there's an important distinction there.

For a moment, I forgot that it was Raccoon that was taught not to kill, especially with knives. Hopefully Modest will allow the shepherd to do his job without doing anything rash.

I have a vague memory that isn't what Shepherds usually do.
