Description
Strange to be putting up a winter pivcture in the summer.I have wanted to add this to my gallery since I took it back in January. I came back to it today in my archive and decided to process it properly and have another look.
I made a choice to go out on this morning knowing that the sky would probably stay white, conditions which usually put off landscape photographers. I wanted to make a more graphic landscape using the white sky to my advantage, a technique which I have seen with architectural shots. I realise that many will consider the lack of detail and clipping in the sky to be a problem.
I like the sense of space and stillness which it gives the image and think that it has added to the freezing conditions and the minimal composition.
What do you think?
This is the River Hamble near Southampton in Hampshire. it was probably 5 or 6 degrees below zero at the time and although the river is tidal here ice sheets still covered areas close to the bank.

This shot is amazing. The tree-thing looks like a reindeer for me. It is very nice, as if it had been stopped by the frozen weather, just as it was springing in the water.

I love the tones here, and it has a "feeling" which is fantastic. There are thousands of pictures posted here every day, nicely composed, great colours and exposure...but they don't have any atmosphere....but this shot does.
There's a stillness, a peace, and a loneliness to it that's beautifully captured

I've read the other comments. For me the thing that is not quite right is not the sky (because having no sky could work in a photo like this) but the point of interest itself---the branch.
Although it makes for a very different and well-executed photo, I think that had you shot where it wasn't included in the picture, the photo would be a definite fav-worthy one. It just seems like it's too much.
Or, more importantly, in my opinion, had the branch been more graceful, and without the sharp points, but still the same size, that would have worked also---beautifully.
I hesitate writing this as I never ever "criticize" (and I'm only an amateur photographer anyway) but for the fact that I saw others had stated their views and the fact that it really is interesting as to whether it works or it doesn't.
I do love your photography otherwise I wouldn't be watching you.

Firstly, don't hesitate to give me honest critique, you don't need to be a pro photographer to have an opinion. Photography is very subjective and I appreciate any feedback. Secondly, I think you have a great point and it is something which no one else has raised. Thankyou for taking the time to look and thankyou for supporting my work generally.

Personally I really like the subject and over all mood especially the minimalism you are refering to, but Im quite put of with the color rendition because a blown out sky does not fit so well in color as it does in B&W (though thats just personal taste and we all have our set of likes and dislikes ).
Thank you for sharing this serene peice of work with us, I really enjoyed seeing it through a different perspective along side a different rendition through color instead of B&W
Over all, well done

Thankyou. Yes it's different and we are so used to sky detail which is missing here.

This shot is really quite interesting and different and I definitely like it but yes there is definitely something strange that doesn't quite work. I think it could be the composition in that it is very heavy on the right side because of the tree but I am not sure. It is still very unique.

JakeSpain In reply to JamesHackland [2009-07-12 08:00:20 +0000 UTC]
Interesting angle on things. You could be right about the balance, there is nothing of any weight to balance the tree and the composition therefore relies more on the space to the left for balance. Also I think we are so used to seeing the sky detail which is missing here.
Anyway, glad you like it, glad I didn't leave it ignored any longer.

I think most of us need to become a little more comfortable with submitting images that deviate from the norm and not worry about whether or not the majority of people on DA will like it or not.

Exactly mate, been thinking about this point alot recently. Can't let the search for the popular and predictable get in the way of finding the extraordinary. But that's just words for now....We'll see what happens. I used to upload different stuff to my scraps similar to you having Elliptical but it kind of just went under the radar, I haven't added to it for a while but that'll change.

I think this shot is really quite different and well executed, although there is something I cant put my finger on which isnt quite right . Still it's a fav from me, I like that it is unusual

Thanks mate, I'm glad to hear that. I'm reluctant to put up the unobvious, unusual, experimental and I need to get over it. Things move on, styles develop, good things happen through breaking the rules a little sometimes.
I can't put my finger on it either (7 months now!).
