Budd Company built 73 Hi-Level Cars for Santa Fe's El Capitan operated between Chicago, IL to Los Angeles, CA just like the Super Chief just prior before Amtrak took over the passenger route on May 1, 1971, and before the second new bi-level Pullman-Standard Superliners and same thing for Bombardier Transportation.Top to Bottom:Β

Yes indeed, they still exist today since Amtrak retired five of the six lounge cars two years ago on February 4, 2018, due toΒ citing safety concerns and rising maintenance costs.
