Description Through the Eldritch Gate - concept

Once you've begun the path into the other world from the entrance [link] , seasons and time flip, a bizarre mirror on reality. This leads to the entrance to the gateway, where two worlds meet and what most believe non-existant, becomes all too real [link] .

About the size of a large rectangle post-it note.

Took about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Done using .05mm, .2mm & .5mm black pigment ink.

Comments appreciated.

WHAT?! This is EPIC! Are you illustrating children's books? You need to be.

Haha, nope just drawing whatever comes to mind really. Although a couple of these relate to a little story I've got building up in my head.

I hope that your story reaches critical mass so you complete it and I can read it to my kids (or grandkids maybe, I know how busy folks are these days).

I would love to see this painted in large scale with flat oils. It's a profoundly powerful image.

Oh wow, I'm glad you liked it! Too bad I can't paint at all, I just do some scribbles in my spare time

It's never too late to start, and it doesn't take training to learn, just practice and time really. Try doing some thin washes of simple, flat colours with no tone first then by the time you've managed to build up solid colours on the canvas you should be familiar enough with what you're doing to start thinking about more. Another technique that can work well (especially for images like this)is to paint thickly on top of charcoal lines that haven't been sealed (with spray). You wind up with a really warm black outline to everything and if you do it carefully (probably try the other technique first) then it can look really clean and interesting.

I think I'll give it a go during my uni break this christmas, focus on trying different mediums! Do you find the materials very expensive? I had always though they were really expensive for some reason...

Charcoal is really cheap, oil paints vary in price based on quality. I tend to go for mid-range products that come in around NZ$10 per tube. Don't forget that you need linseed oil for thinning paint and turps for cleaning your brushes if you're using oils (dip brush in turps, swish around, wipe on a rag). I suggest messing around with different consistencies of paint on a big piece of paper before starting your painting. I always do about 20 semi-opaque layers of thin paint to build up a surface. Oh yes, prime your canvas with titanium white acrylic before starting! If you don't want to make a big investment just buy one of those packs of about a 10 -20 tiny tubes, though all you really need is white, red, yellow, blue - you can mix up every imaginable colour from these and by mixing brown with blue you get a far more interesting colour than black will ever be. Ummm I hope that all made sense and was helpful.

Sorry for the late reply, but thank you for the tips! I'm thinking over the Christmas holiday I'll get stuck into trying some basic painting and see what happens after I get a hang of it.
