James - a trick: hold down the Alt key then type 255 on the numeric pad and release the Alt key. That should give you a space

Ctrl is the first to go on mine - there's plenty of free software about that lets you re-map the keys - for instance you could set the AltGr as space.

Oh I do sympathise with the defective keyboard! I have a problem with mine in that I can no longer type properly in the comments section of deviantArt - there's a dreadful lag before the keystroke appears and the help desk had nothing useful to offer. I've resorted to typing in WordPad and then pasting it into the comments - oh well, at least my space bar works
