Description
A scavenger waits,Until the end of oblivion has past,
to search and feast upon the waste lands,
like a vulture circles, dead meat.
After all, the scavenger knows
There are rich pickings, to trade,
in the waste lands of those battle fields,
in the ruins of those Cities, Ah to be A scavenger,
Yes that's the life for me.
Carrying on with the dystopia theme, Apocalyptic wastelands and other future events that may or may not occur, i decided to Think of the idea on the aftermath of War, an Apocalyptic war, And pondered on what a day in the life of a Scavenger would be like - so, i created this drawing, that mainly is in the line art\hatching style. I wanted the Character to have a steampunk slight appearance, some kind of artificial limb, A cape, I utility belt, pouches, Weapons and other items that you can see. The Figure is carrying a sack full of various objects, and sifting through the junk and other strange looking surreal items that are in the foreground of the drawing. the moon is full, there's some Strange looking Spherical objects and a pyramid object in the sky too. maybe probes or even drones ...who knows..

Harvey Jacks Is an Artist i admire very much, his smooth subtle style and character design is something quite fantastic to view, if you have time, go check his artwotk out. like most of these artists i adnire, they not only hold great artistic skill, they also have such wonderful imaginative minds and this particular artist gave such a beautiful analysis of the ''Scavenger'' that i just had to add his Thoughts and interperation of this drawing, read below;
''Scavengers background'' Described by Harvey Jacks

I keep thinking about this scavenger. Like on deeper levels. Obviously we get why he does it but is it all out of necessity? Is it somewhat out of boredom?
I’m now looking in the direction of enjoyment. Whose to say he Isn’t smiling under that visor? Perhaps his heart skips a beat when something rare and exciting catches his eye. Heck, I think I can hear him whistling in there! I wonder if he has a vast collection of trinkets and do dads back at his home? Like some stuff he collects as resource and others for his personal enjoyment. Oh but his bag is huge. It must all be for resource. Nah, can’t be. Look at all those pouches and pockets he has. That’s where the treasures go! Thats where he keeps those items that are near and dear to his heart. I knew he was a sentimental sap!
Next I’m wondering what he looks like from the pyramid’s pov? That thing can’t just be up there alone. It has to be piloted by someone or something. Whatever the case our scavenger friend seems to pay it no mind so that tells me it’s not such an odd occurrence. To him at least.
Like a leaf on a breeze, we just blew away...please enjoy the artwork.

The detail is a bit surreal because it started off as a surreal piece but flourished into what you see now, a lone Scavenger, sifting the wastelands for any valuable items to trade with. this was drawn a while ago and at the moment my mind has been a bit vague ! lol. thank you so kindly for your very enthusiastic comment.

My scavenging days were in the 80s. Then I adopted an attitude of not trying to accumulate too many things. I value material possessions based on two parameters: if it can't carry me, or I can't carry it, it's not that practical. I hate big furniture, even if it is comfortable. I've moved so many times and each time I throw away a big piece of furniture, rather than move it. I have a patio table and folding chairs as my dining room set, 5 wooden tables that I can carry 4 of them without help, and a refrigerator that I'm going to leave to my stepson when I die.
That being said, who knows how I would feel about scavenging after the apocalypse, especially if that's the way to survive. I sometimes shake my head when I read about millionaires who are building nuclear-proof homes, or buying property in New Zealand in order to survive a world war. The strong will survive, not the rich. I also laugh about people who are hoarding food and such for a disaster. Those who don't store food will use violence to take the food from the hoarders. I think it's a good idea to invest in bullets, not food or New Zealand real estate.
Cool drawing, BTW.

If one is to invest in metals, lead is better than gold.
Bullets are hard to come by here, but my brother in law has plenty in Arizona.
If and when I move back to the states...
Thank you for your applause. The next time I am a scavenger, you can believe I'll be armed and loaded.

I love it! Nice surreal touch with the objects floating in the sky. The things he has gathered so far seem to be mostly children's toys... Makes his history and the world he lives in even more mysterious. Love the subtle coloring as well. Very well done my friend!

I'm glad you mentioned those surreal pieces, i remember sketching this drawing from my mind thinking, 'why should they be relevant pieces of junk?' lets make them surreal pieces and the result was good. ah, it all depends on the Area of wasteland, remember the variety of human materialism and those survivors in this Scavengers world have young, so this Scavenger will collect anything to trade with, even surreal toys if need be XD
Many thanks my friend for your very lovely comments. !

Yes, swing the toys made me think of that post apocalyptic movie Book of Eli. When he goes to get a battery charged the first thing the merchant asked for in trade was toys. This scavenger is doing what he can to survive... I just noticed that in addition to his headgear, his right hand (and possibly arm) is robotic. Very nice touch there, suggesting that there is some level of technology that survived as well in his world.

Yes, exactly, 'the Book of Eli'' what a great film that was ! ah again, you have a keen eye. the Robotic Limb, gives a hint to Technology still being very much in focus !! so glad you spotted that !!

The design of this character is awesome. It's quite fun to look at all the objects on the floor too. Special mention to the smoking sand dude, the little Jesus and the small guy (maybe the small James once again?) claiming the moon with his flag.

If you can imagine a vast wasteland, an apocalyptic aftermath and with those who remain after this aftermath, '' Scavenge'', trade barter what every they find. It's in almost every dystopia story-line zotco, think of Mad Max, or any movie that has this content and context. i think adding hints of colour here and there is more effective when it comes to Line-art hatching...i like doing it this way.
thanks for the comment.
