You're too kind. I love the eyes in this one particularly, really sets off the whole piece. Good to be back on devArt - I'm around for about 9 weeks now!

You seem to lead a pretty busy and exciting life, that was a long adventure you were off on. I don't know if I could have survived the primitive internet connection

XD I'm still there, to tell you the truth. Just on holidays for the moment. I can deal with little internet, but it really is nice to be back. How've you been?

Thanks for asking, nobody asks me that! I've been my workaholic self. I spend most of my life working on image files, trying to get just the right look, feel, and completeness to every image. In a lot of ways that are like your short stories and poems. Each image is a tidy little self-contained story. Sometimes they are part of a larger series too, but a good image can usually stand alone if called upon to do so. It is kind of surprising how little time a photographer actually spends shooting, we do at least 10 hours on the computer for one hour of shooting by my estimate. It is quite possibly even more time than we used to spend in the darkroom per a given photo shoot. But I do it because I love it and nothing else in my life seems to provide more sense of accomplishment. Creating artistic works brings beautiful new things into the world and makes a lot of lives better. What could outdo that?

I reckon folks should ask more often
I've never been good with creating images, or photography, but I can imagine how it must be to be working at such things. My older brother is a musician, and my younger is incredibly good at films and computers, so I see the work put into such projects, even though it is not the exact same thing. It sounds amazing to be in the process of shooting, though. I think one of the best things about your work is that you showcase such a broad range of people and styles.
Art is a strange and wondrous thing. Often rather elusive, and almost entirely subjective to the people viewing it. But it means so much. I love that there are so many different mediums for it. Some are more difficult to appreciate than others, but the diversity is what makes it so very rich and beautiful.

I know I have said this about you before, but you always inspire me to say it again; so wise at such a young age!

Again, you're way too kind. There's nothing deep in what I say, it's just the truth.

But to find the truth in things, one must look past the surface, down to the depths, where the essence lies. If you deal in truth, you are in deeper than you might think ^^.

I'll accept that as a sign of your humility. You are going to be known as a great writer one day soon.

I'd just as soon not be known, to be honest. I've been delaying sending off my manuscript for seven months now. It's getting sad. You, however, are clearly already going places! It's wonderful to see art in application, actually being professionally worked.

Thank you Dear. I do try. But do send off that manuscript, no more delays. Even if it gets rejected, it is still a necessary step forward. Rejections often have to come before successes, but not always. If you think it is ready, it probably is. I have faith in your ability to make that call. Life is a one-way continuum, and we have no choice but to plunge forward. So why not do so fearlessly?

Actually, tonight I took a big step forwards. I cut out 1000 adverbs. I've been working since 6, and it's...12 now. I do feel rather inspired.
It's not the rejection that deters me. It's sending it off and not being able to make any more corrections. The thought of sending it off and then realising something wrong with it sends me into a cold sweat.
I'm not a very fearless person.

I know what you mean, I too tend to over-perfect everything. But I try to remember an old saying from some anonymous guitar player "it doesn't matter if your guitar is fully in tune, as long as its "close enough for rock n' roll". That is attitude and confidence. It reminds me that a lot of older songs were recorded in one take. They used to know something we've forgotten in the digital age; little imperfections lend personality and character. Too much sanitizing can homogenize style. Human error is part of being human and of individuality, one shouldn't try to flush all of it away.

This is true. The thing is, I sent it to an author in December, and she wrote back saying it was good but certain things needed to be changed. By then, it was my fifth year working on it and I knew if I touched it again before I was ready, I would hate it. Seventh year next month, I believe, and I guess it's hard to let go.
But I've surprised myself today. Reading over old jokes and laughing, and getting emotional about it again. It's been a long time. I think the break was needed.

Remember too that one author's opinion will not tell you the whole truth, it is still just a subjective opinion. You have spent plenty of time pondering it, revising it, loving it and hating it, let some publishers see it now! Good luck!
