Description Ask Movie Slate - Episode 185

I've been wanting to talk about this movie for the longest, especially since I saw that the world of My Little Pony is not stranger to the concept of hazmat suits. I always found that hilarious, how this world full of cute and colorful ponies is prepared in case there is a bio hazard threat. I originally had Doctor Horse to be in the booth with Movie Slate, then I changed it to just Movie Slate shouting and screaming at the audience to leave, but finally decided to set for Nurse Redheart to be in the booth. I have this idea of Nurse Redheart to be a weathered expert in medicine, plus she's severely underrated as MLP characters go. We have barely seen her since the earliest seasons! Nurse Redheart needs more love, and goddamnit I'm really comfortable giving her a cameo in Movie's blog.

" Outbreak" is one of the best examples of how bad blockbusters and action movies were during the second half of the nineties. I subscribe to what Doug Walker said in one of his editorials, about how there was a dark time when the quality in movies dropped spectacularly, especially for the summer movies, and the action, science fiction and fantasy genres. Outbreak has all the elements of a movie that insults the audience with every minute that passes. The writing is terrible, the situations are histrionic and unrealistic, the characters are moronic and unlikable, and the plot is so full of holes and inconsistencies one wonders how it even move from just the first draft. It's a shame because they acting is not bad, everyone does a good job, and the way the disease is portrayed is very visceral. If only it wasn't so hokey, and silly, and insulting to the audience's intelligence, it could've been a classic. But as it is right now it's nothing but a wasted product of a time period that brought us such bombs as "Island of Dr. Moreau", "Steel", "Batman and Robin", "Godzilla (1998)", and "Wild Wild West".

Those suits were a lot of fun to work on, especially when I compared the action-y hazmat suits from the movie with the more recent suits that are used nowadays. Albeit I went more with the way they look in the film, for the sake of keeping them accurate of course, and followed the pony design we've seen in Bats! . I never had a chance to draw fabric like this, very plastic-like, with a lot of shine. Also the helmets, and how the light would affect them, those were fun to work on too. I think I made the scene way too warm, way too pleasing, not sickly enough. I wanted to bathe the entire picture in yellow highlights and yellow/orange shadows, not only to give the feeling that there's a disease in the air, but also because the movie is just total piss. There's still a bit of that there, though. I think. What do you think guys?

I hope you all enjoy the picture!

Please, let me know what you think of it in the comments. I appreciate and every single one I receive.

Thank you!

I tried watching it a few days ago, and man I had to stop the moment that Kevin Spacey's character gets a tear in his suit and doesn't tell anyone in the team, like an idiot.

My tastes aren't the best either, so I'm not one to judge. If you like something, you like it, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

The movie showed so much promise too. I can still find some enjoyment out of it though. It did frustrate me a little when they sent in hazmats and not armed guards for a situation that called for it the most.

It's not a bad, bad movie, it's just mediocre. It's aged better than other movies of the time, to be perfectly frank. This isn't Batman and Robin.

Lol, yes I agree with you. This is a great piece, I'm always impressed with the color and shading you do.

Now this movie was a real perennial TV staple for me to the point that when ever it came on I was sure to be on a different channel. Though I must say I always had a bit more of a... positive opinion on this. Then again, the last time I saw Outbreak was when I was considerably younger, hence not as experienced nor insightful, so that may be part of the reason. And I really don't have all that much interest to revisit it either after all this time to see how I'd feel about it now. Just back in the day I thought it was pretty intense and good.

I always liked Redheart when it came to minor characters on the show, but who always tended to be overshadowed by other - sometimes even less notable - ponies. But Redheart's cool.

Yeah, the yellow could be even "yellower" to get your intended impression across, this one seeming more general grindhouse yellow accent light, but love the hazmat suits. Didn't recognise Redheart there at first until reading your descriptions, but those outfits are rather covering of individual features.

Oh yes, this movie practically lived in TV. I've seen it appear on TV more often than I've actually seen it on DVD or Video. If you want a better movie about this subject, watch "Contagion". It's way better, way more interesting, and next to no bullshit in it.

Redheart is seriously underrated, which is a shame when she could be such a cool action girl, taking care of the situation like a boss.

I think I didn't want to drown the drawing in yellow. Perhaps because yellow is kind of an obnoxious color.

Funny you mention "Contagion" as that one's coming on TV here, like, next week! I haven't seen it before, so might catch it then.

Now here is a movie I've never seen.Β  Seems like I lucked out too.Β  I've seen every other movie on that list of bad ones though.Β  Steel this year.Β  It's terrible, but it's Shaq movie, I'm not surprised there.

The art is great though.Β  Love the color tones, even if it isn't as sickly as you wanted.

The 90's were a dark, difficult time, during which not many good blockbusters were made, and those that were good only aged to just be okay (and sometimes not even that).

Thank you for checking my art, man You're awesome.

I remember really liking Spawn at the time, but that clip from Nostalgia Critic was like "it looks like THAT!?" Β The first one that comes to mind that's still good is Lion King, but that's Disney and they generally have a better track record. Β Me being eight probably helps my opinion there.

I've been following Movie Slate for a long time now. Β Above and beyond the good, (and improving!) art it reminded me of the good aspects of working at Blockbuster. Β Bullshitting about movies basically. Β

Keep on keepin' on.

Disney movies have a tendency to age better than the average movie, even the worst ones.

Spawn is a piece of shit, though.

I miss Blockbuster, that was a store built out of a pure love for movies and movie making. Some of the best conversations about movies I've had them at the counter of a Blockbuster store. I shall keep on with the blog, and the spirit of talking about movies, bad and good.

I like Nurse Redheart a lot too. She is very under used.

I agree, she doesn't get enough love. It's a bit sad, considering she's one of the first secondary character we see in the show. Mayor Mare is the other character who also doesn't get enough love.

Well, that's not the best attitude to have when watching a movie. Watch it and give it a chance, maybe you'll like it, maybe you'll end up hating it.

I was just going with everyone elses distaste.

I remember watching it when I was younger and don't think it was too bad.

Try not doing that, because you'll just end up repeating what other people have said, like a parrot. It's best to go without preconceived ideas and develop your own thoughts.
