Description
Ask Movie Slate - Episode 187I love Tree Hugger. I adore her, from her messy rasta mane to her screechy neighing singing, and I wish I could draw her more frequently. I can easily understand why someone would be annoyed by her antics, and the whole hippie look is something I know quite a lot don't really enjoy, but I very much adore her character. I've been wanting to draw her in a Movie Slate update for the longest, and I think this one fits her rather well. Plus it gave me the chance to exercise my stoner talk writing muscles, which is something I never thought I had. Also, drawing Movie Slate with a gas mask and a rather stern look was quite fun. She doesn't judge, she just doesn't want to partake in Tree Hugger's vices.
"Reefer Madness" might be one of the very first examples of film used for the purpose of propaganda. Propaganda by its nature is all about making the other side of the argument look unreasonable, weak, and evil, but once put in perspective with a bit of information one discovers how one-sided these type of movies are. Reefer Madness, not only is no exception, but it's also the funniest, most unintentionally hilarious movie about the dangers of marijuana ever put together. It's loosely based on a real murder case where a kid killed his entire family with an axe, allegedly under the effects of the weed. Later on it was discovered he suffered from schizophrenia and that the drug had little to nothing to do with it, but the damage was already done, and so this movie came to be as a way to warn parents about how marijuana can turn their children into psychopaths. It became a cult classic comedy among college campuses, and even to this day nobody knows who the rights of the movie belong to, or who were the ones behind it . That's why it's perfectly fine for you to play it anywhere and everywhere you want. Thank you, public domain.
I based this drawing in a version of Reefer Madness that was colorized , where the smoke that the characters puff out was bright and colorful, almost neon. You can even watch this version of the movie on YouTube. I wanted to give Tree Hugger's half really strong, powerful, blazed colors, like she's floating in the middle of a rainbow mist, all while keeping Movie Slate in the austere black and white tone of someone who doesn't want to inhale the smokes of oregano. Needless to say, it was a lot of fun using so mane different palettes, and quite the challenge as well. Blending them took a while, but I think the end result is quite alright.
I hope you guys enjoy the picture!
Please, let me know what you think of it in the comments. I appreciate each and every single one I receive.

Evil, evil, eeeeevil marijuana.
What kills me the most is that some of the actors actually looked invested in the movie. It's weird, it's like they didn't know what they were working on.

Especially that piano player (even with no lines, he's the most memorable character outside of the narrator (Dr. Carroll, I think)).
That's often the case with propaganda movies since they often cast amateurs. Although this one gives us the very rare case (with the Romeo & Juliet scene) of bad actors trying to act badly.

This movie is still more enjoyable than it should be. Someone should remake it.

Can't believe I'm replying to such an old comment, but I just remembered that it was remade as a musical in 1998 and that musical was made into a movie in 2005 with Kristen Bell and Alan Cumming.
And by the way, Britt Irvin (Lightning Dust), Chiara Zanni (Daring Do) and Rebecca Soichet (Sunset Shimmer, Sugar Bell and singing Twilight) are extras in it.

I remember that musical, dang.
Maybe I should make a follow up picture with all those characters, that is an eclectic group of ponies for such a bizarre concept. A Reefer Madness musical, like, wow.

Honestly, I'm gonna say that the funniest aspect about Reefer Madness isn't it being obvious propaganda built on bullshit arguments, but the fact how the leading character the principle dude look like he's bonkers.

They all look like they're insane, even before they start smoking weed. It's hilarious even before it gets really hilarious.

Actually, wouldn't that have been a more awesome twist if turns out there wasn't any weed involved, all these characters were just batshit bonkers in reality.

Maybe that's what happens in the movie, and they are all insane.

Bonus points for making the last line sound like "well, duh!", given what she says.

That moment when you're high and realization hits you, that you're a walking skeleton wearing a human flesh suit.

I like the "ghost driving a skeleton in a flesh suit" version too.

There's also a version of this movie on DVD with Mike Nelson riffing on it, MST3K style.
Also link seems to be broken, had to use Outbreak to get here.

Yeah, I know of that version. It's the one I based Tree Hugger's part off.
I'm going to assume you meant the link on the Tumblr blog. Fucking Tumblr likes to break the links and not showing them. You should be able to see it now. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Yep, Reefer Madness is certainly something. So bad and so misguided, yet so funny because of its inaccuracies delivered as a sincere warning. Just reading the symptoms of marijuana addiction in the opening text crawl maks you roll your eyes. It truly is "enemy no.1" of movies everywhere and it can attack you... and you... and YOU!
I only cursorily saw Tree Hugger in that one episode when doing a quick once over, but the character seemed much better than I expected. She seems pretty fun and perfect as a little Equestrian pot head. Love the dialogue here, gave me a chuckle.

I do have a knack for stoner dialogue, it seems. Maybe I'll make one of those movies one of these days.
I wonder what the original creators of Reefer Madness thought about their movie when it was taken the wrong way, if any of them lived long enough to see it become an unintentional comedy of sorts.

By the way, I prefer to read the "talking horses" line as if she just now realised this.

The stoner talk made me laugh quite a bit

Oh God, I didn't even notice I made that pun! The horses have officially taken over my mind.
It turns out I can write some really good stoner talk when it's 6:00am and I'm severely sleep deprived. I bet that's how some terrible stoner comedies were made during the late 90's.
