Ask Movie Slate - Episode 221 - TEDCommissioned by
I've encountered a hurdle lately, which revolves around me trying to simplify my shading. I've become so used to doing super complex shadings that I forgot how to just do simple shading. It's kind of ridiculous when I put it this way, but it really has become an issue for me lately, especially when I try to simplify a drawing for the sake of comedy. In the end, the shading for this one came out warmer than I wished, but if I had kept tinkering it I wouldn't have been able to move on to the next one. Also, fuck that couch. I hate it.
It's difficult to talk about "TED" without talking about Seth MacFarlane himself. Like I said in my review of "A Million Ways to Die in the West ", I am a big fan of his TV shows. Family Guy, Cleveland Show, American Dad, you name it. I always get something out of watching those shows, and what doesn't work for many it actually works for me. While "Million Ways to Die" felt constructed just out of cut away jokes, "TED" on the other hand is a much more cohesive story with better focus, better characters, and far better actors. Yeah we still have Giovanni Ribisi in there and he's just as unlikeable as ever, but everyone else is just so good, and charming, and they have chemistry with each other. I loved Mark Wahlberg in it, he's just such a likeable guy, with his earnest every-day-guy schtick, and even Mila Kunis delivers a pretty solid performance too!
But it doesn't just have good acting, the comedy actually works in this (at least it works for me). The slapstick has the timing of a Looney Tunes cartoon with a fair amount of adult edge, and it's varied enough that it doesn't feel repetitive. The party scene at Ted's apartment is one of my favorite comedy scenes I've seen recently. It knows how long it should be, it takes advantage of every trick in the book, it's funny, it's insane, and when it ends it just feels right. It's like a perfect summary for this movie.
"TED" is a comedy that manages to overcome some of the most tiresome hurdles of the genre to give us a slick, likeable and surprisingly charming movie with more charisma than anything else Seth MacFarlane has done in his entire career. The only thing weighing it down, ironically, is the name attached to it, but if you give it a chance you will not be disappointed.
I hope you guys enjoy the picture!

My favorite part is when the actor who played Flash Gordon in that movie shows up at the house party, and Mark Wahlberg has that whole dream sequence of riding through a sci-fi adventure with him.
