Description Comission for

If you guys know Fallout 3, then you have likely heard of the history of Vault 92. For those of you who don't, here is one "small" sum up:

So during the war, a group of the most talented musicians was kept inside a vault, to preserve their talent. However, the scientists behind the creation of the vaults used this one in particular to test the effects of drugs (or something else, I don't remember it so well) which ended up with all the musicians going insane and killing each other.

It's a very tragic ending, especially when you consider all the talent that got lost forever. That's pretty much what's happening to Tavi and Vinyl.

The original idea of the comission was quite more...crude, to use a charitable adjective. I somehow managed to convince the comissioner to do something less violent. And even with that, this set up breaks my heart, because I love Tavi and Vinyl. Imagine a lonely tear running down my cheek.

EDIT - said:

Vault 92 was equipped with white noise generators capable of hypnotizing, then implanting subliminal messages into, those who listened to their sounds. The plan was to create mind-controlled super soldiers. The test subjects went murderously insane. Truly was a sad loss of talent.

Thanks for pointing it out <3

The inhabitants went insane because of white noise. I remember the vault 92 It was flooded with water, and i think you had to detonate a propane bomb because it was infested. But in reality Octavia never went into the stable program, and Vinyl died because the Stable Ai went bunkers and killed everyone because the water talisman broke. You could say that part of Octavia lives on inside of her contrabass because Rarity did Voldemort on her

I honestly cannot blame you for being so unwilling to design the original scene given to you by your commissioner. If just looking at such a scene involving the beloved characters of MLP FiM is painful and cringe-inducing, I cannot fathom the guilt and emotional turmoil the artist must feel for actually making it in the first place. It also makes one wonder why someone would even WANT to see such horror happening to these beloved mares. The depictions of violence in action scenes is understandable, but something as forced as this? It's barely more than a contrived bad joke.

I honestly despise the Fallout Equestria series for this fact, placing the characters we love and relate to in such horrifying situations that, when it comes right down too it, can't possibly happen in Equestria from what we have seen. It is also highly disrespectful towards the source material as the series heavily relies on suspension of disbelief to convince the reader that the show could someday become this. Even Cupcakes, despite how awful it is, was more faithful to its source material since it has been proven that Pinkie Pie does become mentally and emotionally unstable when depressed. I also am deeply disturbed by the unconditional popularity of this subgenre in MLP fanfiction. It's like all someone has to do to get noticed is write something decently written with "Fallout Equestria" in the title, which instantly gains a crapton of upvotes or likes in a few weeks. Stories like Past Sins are far more deserving of attention and praise than this and I feel sorry for any kids who grow up with this show and discover this subgenre in several years. That is how you rape a childhood.

I fail to understand how such a combination could possibly catch on like this. The Fallout games are certainly good and MLP FiM was spectacular in the first two seasons and continues to be enjoyable into season 3 and 4, but seeing them together is just mind-boggling. Such a combination just does not add up. The only MLP generation that this could have worked with was G2 in My Little Pony Tales where the world was set in the modern day. And with how unpopular the show was, this could have been a great set-up for some decent satire since no one would really mind how the characters would be portrayed. But G4?

I won't tell people not to like the series. That's for them to decide. But to me, Fallout Equestria is one of the most insulting and disturbing crossovers to any TV show I have ever heard of.

Most people like to corrupt nice things, in reality or in their imagination. It's human nature, not that it's "correct", just "natural".

That's just sad. People need to appreciate things as they are.

In a certain way, they do. Friendship themes and the warm nature of those creatures remains beneath the thick, bleak facade of fallout series. Maybe in the exterior looks just violence and suffering, but deep inside you can see friendship, will to survive and a sincere desire to fight for better world.
They do corrupt them, they do break them, but also there is a spark of hope, something people would seek and need in this global, capitalized situation when money is what matters most over anything else.
Maybe an analogy of our feelings, a rose that blossoms in the middle of the wasteland looks like a piece of paradise.

But that's the original, later just imitate and some people just are so fucked up.

I still remember that fault. Walking into it and hearing the odd noises coming from the speakers. I recall reading the logs, noting that the first 'insane' subject took 23 bullets to take down, but was somewhat glad that I didn't encounter any survivors, just mirelurks. There was a point in the vault where you could remove the Mirelurk infestation by activating a noise through the speakers, killing all them all.

I think the 'death noise' made by radio/speakers/pipbucks left in the Pink Cloud in Fallout Equestria was based on this. Very freaky.

This picture is very graphic, and yet tragic if you think about it. They are a favorite pair of mine too.

You're not the only one that that place left an impression on. I didn't even go to it on purpose; it was by pure accident that I uncovered it. I still just think about my first thoughts as I explored it and read all of those logs, thinking of all of those innocent people and what had happened to them. Thinking about it was what made me come up with the story in my head to incorporate Vinyl and Octavia. As James said, what I originally thought of was much darker and more graphic, but I'm glad it didn't turn out that way and it was left open enough to pull a happy ending out of my butt. Given what those people went through, it had to be done.

Actually, you know what? I hereby decree that this picture takes place after they just escaped from Vault 92. Both of them have significant mental scars, with Octavia in particular being especially broken from being forced to kill her fellow bandmates in self defense, but they survived and make their way to Canterbury Commons. Although they both suffered, they are able to still live their lives in relative peace together.
Later, during the impromptu war between Antagonist and The Machinist, Octavia and Vinyl Scratch use the lighthearted and silly (if you don't know Antagonist's origin) occurences to motivate them to create a soundtrack together to commemorate the comic book in motion before them. It was a huge hit that brought them fame throughout the DC wasteland.
There, happy-ish ending to make things slightly better.

Subliminal messages, to try and see how it could be used to modify human behavior. The overseer then thought that it would be a great way to kill off anyone he didn't like by making a random civilian just walk up and rip someone's head off. Worked a little too well, though, as the stress everyone's mind was under made them not just stop after the first kill but turned them into berserk savages, resulting in the entire Vault quite literally tearing itself apart.

ssjcharon [2012-10-05 11:23:46 +0000 UTC]

Even toned down this still turned out even darker than I originally thought. To be honest it was less you convincing me to change it and more me re-reading what I wrote and self-reflecting that I might be nuts. Still, this went much better than I expected. To be honest with the way you drew it with Octavia on the ground crying and Vinyl putting a hoof on her shoulder to comfort her, I would re-interpret this as the two of them having not gone insane, but are still upset because they have been needing to kill their fellow Vault dwellers in self defense. It's a much more emotional picture than what I was first looking for, and I'm glad that you took it in this route instead. Thank you.
