Description Ask Movie Slate - Halloween 2016 - Re-visiting [.REC]

This one brings back good memories, mostly because it's sort of a remake of an update I made around four years ago.

For this year's Halloween event, we're going to be talking about found footage movies, a genre that's so extended it has gone into other genres like comedy and science fiction. It is horror, however, the terrain where found footage first started (with Cannibal Holocaust) and that's where it finds itself more comfortable, with at least one or two movies coming out every year that have this style of film making. For better or for worse it has become another way of making movies so while some people think this gimmick has run its course there's still going to be movies like this coming out.

My personal opinion on found footage is the same as with every genre. It all depends on what you do with the narrative limitations you've been given, and how creative you can get with them. And, just like every other genre, there will be gems and there will be flops. That being said, I like found footage movies. There can be a lot of effort and artistry in putting together something that looks sloppy and improvised, and the actors have to work extra hard to sell their performances as genuine, since they are portraying real people caught in the middle of something extraordinary, or at least something worth preserving the footage. So I'm kind of biased towards this genre, but that doesn't mean that I love every movie that comes out with this same film style.

So for this upcoming week of Halloween, let's talk about a few of those found footage films and see if they are hidden gems or just massive flops, and I plan to rate them the same way I rated all those shark movies a few months ago, but instead of cute sharks I will be using these cute little ghost guys .

As for a discussion piece for the comments, please let me know what you think about the found footage genre. Is it a tired gimmick? A gold mine of hidden potential? Has it run its course or are there things left to try and experiment with?

Please, let me know what you think of it in the comments. I appreciate and every single one I receive.

Thank you!

I don't think I've ever actually seen a found footage film, but in principle I think it should increase immersion if used properly, although it has to be careful not to fall into the trap of violating what would reasonably be recorded in order to deliver information.

And, I mean, I have read stories that are the literary equivalent, and some of them are quite good.

When a found footage movie is done correctly it can be downright horrifying. It can draw you in and take you right into the action, but it's a much more fragile genre since the premise is that everything is meant to be really happening, so the acting, directing, and production design all have to be hand in hand. Even the smaller flukes can cause the movie to fall apart at the seams.

Hmmm...I'm kinda split. It usually depends in what movie it's used in stuff like Blair Witch movies that works quite well (specially when you find out the details how the film makers haven't planned most of the stuff and just screwed with the actors to get 'em really angry and pissed off), but in some movies it kinda goes "meh" like say World War 1 Zombies.

jamescorck In reply to Daiskida [2016-10-25 13:35:07 +0000 UTC]

I never heard of "World War 1 Zombies". Sounds a bit...ridiculous.

The Blair Witch Project is the kind of one-hit-wonder that happens on every decade. Low budget movie that causes a massive impact and everyone talks about it (either hating it or loving it). Same thing happened with Paranormal Activity. Some may say these movies are overrated, and they might be right, but what no one can deny is the impact they have left in our collective subconscious.

Oh trust me, if you can track down this movie give it a watch. It's a glorious amount of stupid. The basic plot is that this film crew is making a documentary about a WW1 battlefield and during it they come across this decayed body in a river that has some strange medallion in his mouth, they remove it and suddenly undead soldiers from WW1 began to rise and chase after them.

No prob, reason I'm offering is 'cause this is a straight to DVD type movie. So, finding it might be quite a challenge XD

Annoys me the exaggerated movement of the camera,Β I know Β  that the point is that to look as natural and real as possible but no,Β only I can not get used to it.

But not everything is bad, I love "Chronicle"Β although not if Β count as horror movie.

jamescorck In reply to Maverickwolfzx [2016-10-25 13:30:43 +0000 UTC]

That's the problem most found footage movies have. There is meant to be shaky cam, but sometimes it feels like the one holding the camera is having a seizure. It gets nauseating and annoying. It's not realistic, it's just ridiculous.

I will talk about "Chronicle" when the time comes. I'm planning on reviewing it.

The next day.... a strange corpse of a monster was found in the theater. The body was bludgeon to death by a series of round metal objects and a very heavy object. Local theater pony Movie Slate refuse to comment.

I say just like every other genre, their is always potential and something new to try, its all about the creativity.Β Β  For example, I got some ideas that could be tried with a silent film type of movie.Β  ( but only if I ever do make that jump and get my stuff produced )
