Description Ask Movie Slate - Episode 206 - Grandma got Run Over by a Reindeer.

Featuring as the wrongly accused deer.

That goddamn title is too long for this website.

You know when you're feeling really sad, and angry, and you're working on your picture when suddenly you mess with the command keys on your keyboard and you press the wrong combination? That's exactly what happened to me when I was working on this piece. I was stupid enough to use Ctrl+Shift+U command on the "screen" layer that I use to add highlights and light, which desaturated the whole thing making it look like I just brightened the whole thing using nothing but white. No color, no vibrancy, nothing but pure fucking white, and I noticed the fluke way too late. So I had to go over the whole thing from the start. This is what happens when you're dealing with a crippling outburst of depression and anxiety, folks.

All tech difficulties aside, I actually had fun with this one. I've been wanting to give Tyandaga a cameo in Movie Slate and I thought this one was rather fitting. I've been wanting to take a spin on that one joke from Jim Carrey's "The Grinch" that everyone talks about and I thought this was a somewhat appropriate context. It's not like Equestria doesn't have their equivalent of racial profiling. There is that rather shocking assumption that all gryphons are assholes (and that Lost Treasure of Griffonstone episode didn't help). Also I wanted to draw Marge Gunderson pony, because Marge Gunderson is just perfect, and I'll take every opportunity to draw her.

"Grandma got Run Over by a Reindeer " is one of those movies I wasn't expecting to even exist. Granted it wasn't until the Nostalgia Critic braved himself into it that I heard of it, but it's honestly kind of insane that there is an animated family movie with said title that has an old woman getting run over by Santa Claus on his sleigh. It's like it slipped from an alternate universe and somehow landed on ours, along with the song that inspired it. With that said I think this movie has become an instant guilty pleasure of mine. Sure, it's not very festive seeing a pretty sweet and kind old granny get run over by a reindeer but the tone, the constant innuendos, the train-wreck-on-fire level of the animation, and the abrupt shifting of the song segments are what brings the awful factor to such harmony that it's kind of a sight to behold. Also it has a "Fargo" reference in it and the last ten minutes turns into "To Kill a Mockingbird" but with Santa Claus in the accused chair, so to me that's all I ask for in a terrible movie. It is terrible but it's so entertain at being terrible that's impossible for me not to have fun with it.

I hope you guys enjoy the picture!

O_O HOLYSHIT, That was Kathleen Barr!? I knew that voice sounded kind of similar, damn! Now I regret not drawing Trixie as the partner of Fargo Pony.

That villain song really is fucking awful, but in combination with every other awkward thing it almost kind of works. It is a very weird, awkward special and it feels like they knew it was, so they aimed to make it even more awkward. Kind of fitting since this guy has also directed the Garfield Christmas Special, so maybe that's where his talent lies.

...kind of sad, when you think about it.

Actually, I thought the animation in this movie was really well done. Β It's what I think of when I think of an ideal Christmas animation.

I can give you that, but all the flaws from this movie grow from the same issue. It's based off a song called "Grandma got Run Over by a Reindeer". I really don't know what else could've come out of it other than this insanity.

Damn I love that Fargo pony. Also, I dunno why but I kinda hoped that after Santa runs over the grandma, it would turn into a animated version of Santa's Slay.

Marge Gunderson pony is the best. There's not enough love for her.

An animated version of Santa's Slay would've been fucking cool, actually.

Oh hell yes it, would! Seriously, where else do you get to see Santa murder people! Speaking of which, when it comes to movies does foreign stuff like Russian movies count for submissions?Β

Of course they do!

All movies are welcome for Movie Slate to review. I have to watch them first in order to develop an idea for what to do for the review, of course.

Daiskida In reply to jamescorck [2017-01-19 15:40:34 +0000 UTC]

Well, if that's the case I can recommend something like say Brother 1-2, 9th Battalion or Night Watch. Reason 'cause those are the only movies off the top of my head that were distributed in foreign languages.Β

Daiskida In reply to jamescorck [2017-01-19 15:45:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it is, surprisingly better than the source material. Sadly, don't think Day Watch was as good, which was a shame since they planned to make a trilogy of these movies but that never happened. There's also Burnt By the Sun, but I can only recommend in a sense of watching a good director practically give a middle finger to Russian WW2 veterans.

I remembered seeing this damn movie all the time when I was younger and Cartoon Network was good...

Honestly...you did a good job making a heart warming joke out of such a cherished movie of utter terribleness. And...I agree...the animation is weird. But it's at least 5x better than the CD-i.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jamescorck In reply to PonyTatsujin [2017-01-01 15:50:09 +0000 UTC]

That's a bit of a straw man argument right there. Anything is better than the CD-i, that piece of shit console was a blight upon the entertainment world. I'm impressed Phillips and Nintendo managed to recover from that monstrosity.

I only heard of this one (and the song) after the Nostalgia Critic reviewed it. It feels like it's more an American special than it is World wide.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PonyTatsujin In reply to jamescorck [2017-01-01 15:57:24 +0000 UTC]

...That is true. Any form of animation (even any one of those damn movies IHE reviewed in his Not-Disney Collection special) is pretty much better than the CD-i.

As for it being an American thing...I'm assuming? I dunno...all I know is I saw it almost every day during the whole month of December on Cartoon Network...like 5 years ago. And of course our old friend Doug Walker never ceases to give you quality content for Ms Movie Slate. Hehe.

jamescorck In reply to PonyTatsujin [2017-01-01 16:27:53 +0000 UTC]

I've considered drawing a ponified version of the Nostalgia Critic on Movie Slate's blog, but there's never been a case where the idea felt like a tacked on concept, or something too random to justify it.

I can't believe a TV Channel playing the same movie every day for a whole month, that must've been insane.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PonyTatsujin In reply to jamescorck [2017-01-01 16:34:53 +0000 UTC]

WEEEEEELL...not just that movie. There's other movies they also play...as well as Christmas specials of pretty much every other show they had on lineup. Like Foster's, Ed Edd n Eddy...that sorta thing. And...of course...the other movie I remember seeing a lot...was Frosty the Snowman. Where the story is...apparently there's a town that thinks fun is a dumb concept and therefore is illegal. Main character's dad is the mayor and he enforced that rule cuz he's a prick. Principal is the usual stereotypical asshat. And....suddenly Frosty.

I honestly don't have any ideas, but it'd be nice if the Nostalgia Critic actually did show up in a Movie Slate post. Maybe in the background somewhere if you're doing a sene reminiscent of a movie like, say, Food Fight or something.

I've already reviewed Food Fight with Movie Slate, poor mare took a power drill to the face to erase the memories. I'll see what the future can bring, maybe I'll toss the NC in the background in a future update.

Silver Quill should totally be his attorney, and DRWolf should be the Judge. Oh my God, maybe I should actually draw this.

BlueRav3Pony In reply to jamescorck [2017-01-01 19:49:43 +0000 UTC]

While a nice choice, Dr. Wolf I think would be too lenient of a Judge. Commander Firebrand on the other hand looks like a more serious judge. Or bailiff. Silver Quill would be fit the attorney part nicely.
