Ask Movie Slate - Shark Week - Sand Sharks

Commissioned by

I know the idea is a bit prosaic, what with having the Graboid from "Tremors" fighting against the stupid Sand Shark, but you know what's funny about it? The director of "Tremors", Ron Underwood, came up with the idea for his movie while he was sitting on a rock, trying to figure out reasons as to why he wouldn't be able to leave. He described his original idea as "Jaws but, underground". I would've never expected someone to take this concept so literally as to turn it into a movie. So of course, I can't help but feel a bit miffed at the fact that they've taken one of my favorite movies of all time, and one of the best monster movies ever made, and made a Shark Movie out of it. So I'm with Movie here, I'm rooting for the original. Also, it feels good to draw Movie Slate relaxed for a change. She deserves a break what with all the things she had to put up with last year. Expect to see her a lot like this during this week.

So, " Sand Sharks". What do I say about this movie? It's "Sand Sharks"! It's literally "Jaws" meets "Tremors", and even for the standards of a Shark Movie it does lack in some aspects. Despite it taking place in a beach area, and during a similar festivity to Spring Break, the tone is surprisingly PG-13. There's almost no nudity, the gore is pretty unsatisfying, the production value is lousy (An M-16 rifle turned into a flamethrower? What the fuck?), and it even ends in a stinger ending with the promise of a sequel that will never come. So you'd expect this movie to be absolutely terrible, even for a Shark Movie, right? Well, not really, because there's one thing that makes this movie worth watching. The character of Jimmy Green, played by Corin Nemec. This guy spends the entire movie trying to make this festival happen without a hitch, because he's never managed to accomplish anything in his life and this stupid celebration is his last shot at trying to do something worthy of remembering, only for it to turn into a sand shark buffet. He's also the only character who has a somewhat satisfying arc, and for some reason I spent the entire time thinking he was Markiplier. He kinda looks like him!

So, yeah, this is one movie that is just pure trash, but that one character makes it worth checking it out. I rate it:

I hope you guys enjoy the picture!

Please, let me know what you think of it in the comments. I appreciate and every single one I receive.

I love "Tremors"! 8D Especially the first one. It was the favourite movie of my childhood 83 After watching it 38 times, I was able to remember half of the movie dialog lines 8D Shame the sequels turned more into comedy, than a horror 8/

I haven't seen any of the sequels, they never called me. The first one still retains all the power and charm it had when it first came out, and few other movies can claim such a thing.

The first one is still looking good, even after all these years. That's probably because they were using puppets, not a crapy CGI -_- The prequel is kinda watchable, but don't even bother with the third film. A dinosaur-looking creatures, that fly by farting, is pretty bad 8P

It's a shame they've managed to run such a low key franchise into the dirt like that, which is hilariously ironic when you think about it.

Haven't seen Sand Sharks and I don't need to either to know what it's like. Over the last few weeks my mom and I have perused the Sunday evenings I've visited watching these low-budget straight-to-DVD monster movies on TV, half of them shark movies that all seem to be made by the same people and all equally as bad. And as predictable.

And all decidedly not Tremors. The latter film actually has characters you care about, great comedy, tense action and horror, practical effects that don't look like bottom-of-the-barrel CGI, and just a great atmosphere that never makes you feel like you're loosing intelligence while watching it. Pretty much the complete opposite of all the above "product movies" that intentionally try to make movies that are labelled so bad it's good... which habitually doesn't work since films like that typically only work if the makers aren't trying to intentionally make a bad movie.

Even looking at them as dumb fun doesn't work for me since the point of their creation is just so disingenious that it sucks all the actual fun out of them and makes them utterly boring collections of copy-paste clichΓ©s that are only accentuated by their terrible execution and often sub-par acting. When I can't even derive pleasure from the absurdity of the setup or character actions that in better movies would make me happily grin along (like in Rodriguez's Planet Terror), then what the hell do I have left? Unless this movie comes across in one of those Sunday TV sessions, I'll give this (and likely all the other shark movies to come in your posts) a resounding miss.

I guess the lower the risk the lower the pay off.

Sometimes is interesting to see a movie that has a lot going for it to be a colossal disaster, but with such low budget trashy sci-fi knock offs, the loss isn't all that big. You are only wasting time, although that depends on whether or not you're doing something else while watching the flick (which is usually what I do).

"So, yeah, this is one movie that is just pure trash,Β but that one character makes it worth checking it out." So Markiplier must be a good actor to make it worth seeing then?

Hahah, the actor's name is Corin Nemec, he's not Markiplier but I spent the whole movie thinking he looked an awful lot like him.

I love Tremors, its also one of my all time favorite monster movies.Β  I never realized they made this movie, never heard of it once.Β  but it being a shark movie I can already tell they used computer graphics rather than puppets like the original.Β  ( I assume thats what they used ) ( Computer graphics are great, but it is very hard to beat the authenticity feel you get when using puppets. )

Since I havtn seen the movie, my vote is on the Graboid winning.Β Β  its nice to see Movie relaxing, she needs a break every now & then.Β Β  haha I was thinking how funny t would be if Shriekers were also lounging in chairs next to movie.

Of course they used CGI, and crap CGI at that. Why would they use a real puppet when you can defy the laws of physics with a computer?

I honestly recommend you to check out this mess of a film, though. You might end up cackling your ass off watching it.
