Well when it comes to grids i just draw dots every half inch (or what ever you prefer) round each side of the paper then join together with a ruler. I then do the exact same pattern on a print of the picture i want to draw (printed at the same size) it makes it easy to get the drawing in the right places.
Some people size up from smaller photographs by doubling the grid size but i usually do the same size on both.
The main thing to remember is draw the grid lines very lightly so they can be erased easily
