You got too much space over there. Around here, you would never completely abandon a school building and leave it there for years. It's either gets used in other ways (office space, refugee shelter etc.) or destroyed to make room for another building.

Not true at all, Germany has some really incredible abandoned buildings and I have been to two of them myself.  In fact this photo of mine was taken in Germany: Hanging

We do have a lot of unused space in Canada but something like 95% of the population lives within 200km of the US border and more than 1/3 live in Southern Ontario.  Unfortunately we are in the middle of a population boom right now and condos are the new popular build of choice.  If there is a building that is more than 30 years old, it will be demolished and turned into a glass and concrete condominium highrise, it's pretty much a given.  This particular location is rare indeed, we don't often have locations sitting to rot for years.  Urbex is less than impressive in this country and I can't wait to explore in Europe again.

Ah, I think I worded myself badly. I was specifically talking about schools (or very intact buildings for that matter). Of course we have a lot of incredible abandoned stuff but it's mostly industry buildings - mainly because nobody wants to pay for cleaning up the mess the original owners left.
For example: We have an old Continental factory area right beside our club which has been abandoned for more than two decades. Only recently they they destroyed everything and are in the process of starting to build multiple family houses. The area and buildings were highly contaminated so they had to spend a lot of effort and money to dispose of all the debris.
On the other hand, all the schools that have been closed over the past two decades are still in use in some way, e.g. as refugee shelters or office space etc.

Off the top of my head I can't think of any abandoned schools in Germany but I bet you there still are some.  You'd be surprised how many abandoned buildings there are when you are actively looking for them.

Maybe, I don't want to dismiss that. It's just that I have seen so many schools close in the last to decades and none of them got abandoned. But somewhere in germany there may be a few.
