commission forFelina asked for a post Fall of Reach pic of John remembering his fallen friends Fhajad, Sam, Kelly, and Linda at a memorial to those killed in the glassing of Reach. They appear as he remembers them from training, their memories always with him as he places a flag at their monument.
For further clarification: this was a commission and the above paragraph is what Felina wanted. The children are not ghosts, they are memories of his friends from when they were all in training - when they were "happy". I hope that better explains.

This has also become a tribute to all veterans, since I posted it in time for veterans day. So here's to all those who have given their lives to our safety at war and at home. To those of you serving now, we all pray for your safety and success, and thank you for your sacrifice on our behalf. To every soldier who has ever carried our flag into battle, the US thanks you and loves you for all you have done for us.

Thanks everyone for all the great comments. Thanks no one for comments pointing out who is and is not alive without reading the description where I clarify I know who is alive and dead, I read the books and was paid to draw this picture. Thanks to constant frustration you innocent souls probably think me petty for being so angry about I've turned comments off. No one dare note me about how undead everyone is.

The DEAD status isn't the point of this. Those four were so close to John and now they and the rest of his family are gone, one way or another.

Wow, this is really good. I admit that I know nothing about what's going on, but it still really gets the point across. I don't know if you planned for this to fall on Veterans' Day, but this really works for the occassion.

Agreed. It's almost annoying that the Artist's Comments appear below the art piece- it almost feels like the artist had to explain themselves after everyone derides the piece.

Yeah -_- I've seen it so often, I've just gotten sick of it. It doesn't take very long to actually read and pay attention to what's said in the Author's Comments. That way you won't make comments saying things that were already covered in the Author's Comments(like here, people wouldn't have said anything about Kelly and Linda...). I admit that even I slip every now and then, if I look at something when I'm tired or whatever, but generally I pay attention to the AC, because I think the artists deserve that much. Besides, I understand the feeling, too; when I post my fanfiction, I know that I would want people to actually read my AC, because I didn't put it there for nothing.

He lost his family. No matter what their fate, they're gone and there's nothing he can do. I chose those four because they were the closest to John since age 6.
(Cynicism Alert: Besides, didn't Bungie magically revive Sgt. Johnson in Halo 2? Halo likes messing around with fates, doesn't it? -_-)

I know, I have the books too. But from the view of a person who didn't read First Strike, Sarge's appearance was a WTF? moment.
I'm not a die-hard Halo fan, but I shouldn't have to be one to feel sad whenever John loses his fellow SPARTANs. Just enjoy the picture, don't overthink it and don't lose sight of the emotion in it.

Yeah, I knew they weren't dead, but John hasn't seen them in FOREVER, and never really had closure to their fates. MIAs can still FEEL dead to the comrades who returned home.

The whole atmosphere of the picture is absolutely perfect..and the look on John's face brings tears to the onlookers T.T.. Seeing a aged warrior in this vulnerable state wrenchs my heart (and makes me squeal at the same time). The feeling in the eyes of the other Spartans, i cant describe it but I love it so much.
