that doesn't point out how rich the 1st world is....it highlights how poor 75% of the world is.

The only reason we have internet is for dad's job, which pays little right now. We have a house, but it's an abandoned one. The landlord gave it to us with out pay because the entire bathroom won't work amoungst other things. Rats and mice are fucking everywhere and I'm afraid I'm going to wake up with some disease.
And even with all of this, I'd rather live here then a third world country.
But I'd like it if people, you know, helped more. I haven't been to a doctor since I was five, and my entire thigh has gone numb. I had medicaid, but they told me and dad I was an 18 year old male with a job. I'm a fifteen year old girl with mental problems who can't get her meds.
Joy oh joy.

Very nicely done, this should make us all think, appreciate what we have, and consider doing what we can to help others.

remind? how many people know this simple fact? you have to teach and hammer these kind of messages in 99.999% of western "civilized" people. i don't know any other cultures. can't talk about them...
eyes wide shut. all of us.

Not complaining and don't feel the least bit guilty about my wealth. I got it all through value for value trade or by earning the respect and favor of those who give me gifts. I won't apologize that I'm good at earning my living or that I'm better at it than some people.

I respect that. The point isn't to make you feel guilty or stop buying things. The point is to remind you to be grateful, at least. And not complain when you can't do things like go out with your mates because you may not have money that month, etc etc etc.

I get that we have very privileged lifestyles, but I don't think that it means that we should stop trying to improve our own society simply because we have more then another. I find this perspective dangerous that way. There's a hip hop song that says something about appreciating what you have and not complaining about what you don't have. Well, actually it was 'what you got' 'what you don't got.' I think that the situation with education in my community is worth complaining about.

I think the situation with education (or lack thereof) around the whole globe is something I constantly bewail.

I really don't feel guilty. I wasn't there when my ancestors invaded wherever. I didn't go down there and exploit child workers to get my shoes. Maybe I should stop buying clothing because some kid that doesn't have as much money as I do made it? Or maybe I should move to one of those countries and give them all my money to repent for my sinful life of buying things I need to survive and not feeling guilty about doing so. Maybe you feel like being guilty about living, but I don't think that it's my fault history actually did happen. And I also don't think that donating a whole bunch of money to some third world country will help anybody, because my money won't get where it needs to go anyways. It was a good picture, powerful message, but don't go telling me to feel guilty about living.

You're here today. And the exploitation is as bad now as it was then. It just omits slavery.

I see this as me being lucky, having obviously had good karma in my past life. However, this doesn't mean we can't help that other 75%. There is suffering in the world, but we can help alleviate it. We all need to pitch in though. Perhaps one day we will make that 25% a 100%

I don't feel particularly guilty... I mean, I didn't choose the family I was born in, neither my home country. I think those two are the reasons for I'm not in that 75% of the population...
but I find this reminder the most useful and true. it helps to stop complaining about useless things, and most of everything it helps to remind that being in that 25% means that doing something for the other is a must.
thank you ^_^ today particularly, I needed a reminder like this

We are all equal humans, right? Do I have some kind of biological advantage over people in third world countries? No. Not at all. In fact, they have tons of resources. They're just too busy declaring war and ruling over each other. I swear half of the misery is because they're assing around, spending millions on guns.
Does that make us Europeans smarter then? Biologically, no. Why can we reason why they can't?
No guilt.

JamesRandom In reply to Fzang [2010-04-23 16:05:09 +0000 UTC]
No. Nobody is equal. that is bullshit you are taught at school along with 'plants grow' and 'you see with your eyes'.
Some people are fat. Some thin. Some short. Some tall. Some midget. Some people have better natural aptitude than others. Some people are blind, others are deaf. Some people are disabled. Nobody is born equal. As people we are all equal, but as human beings we are not.
It has nothing to do with being smart and everything to do with the fact that, as a civilised society, we chose to exploit those who were not as advanced as we are in the west rather than help them to become civilised. Rather than help them build and trade, we invaded and stole and killed.
They say that the sun never sets on England, how do you think it got that way? Invasion, slavery and exploitation. It is poor to assume that a nation managed to get itself enslaved by being less intelligent than we. that is how the slave trade began.
How do you think America got so big? They took the land from the indians. Slaughtered them all and when they had taken as much land as they wanted they put up a sign saying 'thou shalt not steal'. Next to the sign that said 'thou shalt not kill.
Whatever you might think of the state of the 3rd world you can be sure of one salient fact: It is OUR fault that they are that way. Not their fault at all. Whenever they have had something of value, we have exploited them for it.
Your shoes. Probably made by some poor teenager who works for 50p a week. and if he asks for a raise? He disappears.
The 3rd world has tonnes of resources but they cant trade it because we have taken it all over. Those who have managed to capitalise on the resources that they have have invariably turned corrupt and saught to imbue themselves with riches rather than distribute it among the poor.
Those starving children, my friend, were made to starve by us. Because we wanted what they had and we had the means to take it by force rather than trade fairly.

I am not saying that we are innocent, but neither are they. Numerous times has it been said that civil wars and internals is one of the major reasons why they can't rebuild. I am not denying that Europeans came, saw and raped, but now we are sending millions their way and improvement is only slooowly showing.
And I still rest my case. I do not feel guilt. And who feels real guilt for them anyway? Saying "yeah, it's kinda sad you know..." and post it from your mac ISN'T gonna cut it. Those are just people saying "yeah, I feel sad" because... that's "good" humanity or whatever you might wanna call it. A part of the society we live in where it's hip to feel sorry for other people and send $10 their way. Kinda hypocrite-y if you ask me.

Faythalie In reply to Fzang [2010-04-23 21:33:48 +0000 UTC]
These internal wars you talk about are still being financed by the western world, and wouldn't exist without its weapon industry.
Also, you say that nobody really cares, and although I can't vouch for the artist here since I don't know him personnally, a lot of people who keep on complaining about these injustices from behind their monitors screen actually DO something about it.
Maybe not much, surely not enough but at least it's something...what are you doing to help?
