i reckon that football and soccer are the same.. since america holds their own football game (the one with an oval-like brown-leather ball), they changed the name for compensation and to alter confusion to its European counterpart..

actually the word-thingie was meant to be an allusion to this Beckham article i read somewhere sayin that the English don't like their "soccer" to be addressed as "football".
