Description So yeah, I finally designed a phaser that I think I can stick with. It takes a lot of cues from the TMP phaser but with a more modern spin, including a holoemitter on the top which can project either tactical information or a targeting reticle, or whatever you so desire, I suppose.

It's a two part phaser, with the head end being a removable Type I as in days of old.

Even the thing I don't like about it, I like about it. That thing is:

No trigger guard. I don't like it because it's insanely unsafe. I *do* like it because it hearkens back to the TOS-through-TMP phasers, which didn't have trigger guards, either.

I guess I do have one other nitpick: an LCARS display on a pistol? How could anybody read it?

that is one cool looking phaser. Question, the special-effects for firing this weapon.
Would it fire constant energy beams or energy bolts?

Depends on the mode.  More often than not, though, bolts.

Glad to see I'm not the only person who thought about taking the ol' Sestra Phaser-III/IV (what the TMP/TWOK was called in "Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise" back in the day) and fiddle around with it. This looks really good, especially for a late 24th or 25th century update of the old design.

Thank you, I'm glad it's been fairly well received by aficionados. When I get a new computer, I might go back and shorten it a bit because I'm not certain about the proportions. We shall see. At any rate, I figured it'd be good to get back to phasers that didn't twist your wrist down to aim, and that old design seemed like the perfect starting point (even though many of my non-Trekkie friends have commented that it looks like a price gun...)

As much as I like the phaser beams, though, I think bolts would suit this more. Perhaps different settings could do either one, but I'm imagining bright blue-white bolts firing out of the front with a sharp pinging noise, like a silencer but more electric.

Hey, remember the original? It was one of the strangest Phasers because instead of firing a solid beam or even short bursts, it shot 4 very thin beams simultaneously one next to the other for no apparent reason.

And looking like a price gun isn't that bad of a thing, I can get it into anime conventions without having to have the blasted prop "peacebonded." Even my Bajoran Phaser toy had to get peacebonded and that thing doesn't look like any real life firearm I have ever seen!

That's a good point, I hadn't even considered that. If it hadn't totally vaporized the Ceti Eel, it probably could have sliced it into very well cooked fillets...

I really want to make a physical model of the phaser design, but I'm not even sure how to start going about it. Maybe in a few months when I move I'll give it a shot.

Good luck. I have two of the three known toy versions, the Playmates TMP and the Diamond Select/Art Asylum TWOK (the first physical model of the Atalskes Phaser-III/IV - I had made a typo in my first comment to you - that can actually split into the P1 and P2). It's a neat design, even though it has its oddities.

I redesigned the TMP Phaser as well and you can see what I did in my gallery. Basically, many of my own ideas take place in an alternative movie-era J.J.-verse, so I was wondering how to make the J.J. Abrams Phaser evolve into something more like the TMP/TWOK Atalskes Phaser-III/IV. I basically wound up doing a hybrid design with a completely new control scheme, a "clip" battery like the one from the Assault Phaser, and a J.J.-stylized, fin-like rear end.

L-O-V-E this Phaser!

Is there a type 1 variant? What about a rifle version?

Outstanding!

The rifle version will have to wait til I have a computer I can model on again, but as for the Type 1, the head pulls out much like the old ones.

Yeeeaaaahhhh, got the reference, but I don't think the name quite fits it. Maybe a phaser rifle...

As I'd mentioned in my comments, I took cues directly from that.

Just like the "khan" phaser seen in Mr Scotts guide. I like the extra details you've added to this model.

Thanks, I'd mentioned in the comments that I based this design off of that. I wanted something more gun-like, and I wanted to include the removable Type I phaser in this design too.
