Evill Will Try to Charm YouDigital Artwork by James Michael Romaguera
Rendered July 19, 2009
"There the light of color green comes and tries to be seen! It will try to charm you and lead you to nowhere which will leave anxiety to your mother. Do not be deceived, if you do, danger is what I perceive."
This image is an interpretation of a childhood memory of mine. Being raised in a province in the Philippines where folklores and legends constitute a significant part of the people's culture, the belief for the extraordinary and supernatural as well as the existence of evil in any form, has always been inculcated in my mind throughout my childhood years.
When I was a kid, my mother would often reprimand us of playing outdoors and wandering at night, with the fear of encountering a santelmo. The Santelmo or St. Elmo’s Fire is a ball of fire that is said to deceive human beings as if it's a light coming from a real source - a house, a bulb or a lamp. It charms humans especially when they are wandering in the darkness, making them follow it until they found themselves lost. Oftentimes, it leads its victims to risky places, a few miles away from where they started, where they may encounter accident or even death. The wandering and the following seems to be endless. It is said that an evil spirit takes the form of the santelmo and tricks its victim.
This artwork, another addition to my night scenes pieces, relives this chilhood memory. It is one of the few ideas in my list which I am planning to make. It was supposed to be purely centered on the triumph of evilness, in the sense that a santelmo charms two girls, taking advantage of their innocence. However, as I was working on it, the idea changed and that I have thought, why not incorporate the cliche concept: battle between good and evil? Goodness, in this case, is represented by the fairy who appeared right before the santelmo charms the kids, giving them warning, telling them not to follow the light as it will lead them to something dangerous.
I colored the light as yellowish green because whenever I see such color of light, I always incorporate it to evilness, like the lights seen during Halloween. The light that charmed Princess Aurora in the classic fairytale Sleeping Beauty is of that color too! With this work, I think I am much getting better dealing with or making light effects with Photoshop. I am much content already with the outcome of the light shading and colors. With the different light sources in the picture - the moonlight, the lamp, the fairy, the sparks, the balls of light - achieving something that will satisfy your obsessive-compulsive self in a short period of time is indeed remarkable. Charged to experience, probably.
