Description
Get in the robot, ShinjiIf you hadn't seen my blatherings on Facebook or received stupidly captioned screencaps via Snapchat you wouldn't know that I blitzed the entirety of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion in two days straight. And ...what the hell even is this show. All 26 episodes plus the End of Evangelion film (bad idea watching that at midnight. Bad idea) last weekend and my brain still hasn't been fully detoxed of Eva feels. The series is equal parts mind-numbingly bewildering and just plain weird, and neither ending actually provides a decent conclusion that makes any sense, but overall it's not a bad show, just heavily flawed. I might do a journal post on it at some point, I have a hell of a lot to say about this show. Β One aspect of the show I did adore was the aesthetics Β - great costume/uniform designs, settings and of course the robots, so maybe expect more fanart at some point. I have a lot of un-concluded character feels to deal with, mainly background characters with pretty much no development at all /sob/
I know the general consensus is that Shinji is The Whiniest Kid in Anime History, and he's often called the worst character in the series, but I find both entirely undeserved and I could write an entire essay defending this boy (I was planning to do it here but then decided against it, I'd be here for literally hours) regardless of how unpopular that opinion is. I will not defend everything about him (DEFINITELY not the first five minutes of End of Eva because WHAT THE FUCK SHINJI) but, as a character, I feel like he gets a lot of undeserved hate. I can sort of see why he gets that reaction but in my opinion that's down to bad writing rather than him being an inherently rubbish character.
I'm aware of the 2007 remake, and will be watching it soon, with my fingers crossed that it's not so much of a trainwreck of psychoanalysis and teenage angst. Sorry if you love this show, it just didn't float my boat as much as I anticipated. As for those who haven't seen it, I'd still recommend it if you're a fan of giant robot/sci fi anime, as long as you just roll with it and don't try and understand it. Your brain will hurt too much. On that note, feel free to get your nerd on in the comments, I'd love to get a few discussions going about the show and what other people thought of it!

I honestly never understood why people hate Shinji considering that he's a shy and abused child. Maybe it was that fucked up scene in the beginning of EoE, but then again that movie was entirely fucked up. I actually felt really bad for Shinji in the Evangelion series to the point he became one of my favorite characters.

I agree, I really managed to engage with him an awful lot more than any of the others - Asuka is just downright unpleasant and Rei doesn't really have her own personality - but I think a lot of people see him as self-centred and whiny because he's worrying about his own personal problems while the world needs saving? I mean his worries and fears are perfectly valid but I think the way the show portrays them makes him seem very selfish, when in fact he's not at all.

I always asked myself, "who the fuck are these people?" in EOE because everyone in it just acts out of character.

It does feel a bit out of place, I agree. Some of the really OOC stuff threw me right off and left me bewildered and annoyed for the rest of the film (along with all the plain weird shit)

He's a kid with a lot of bs stacked against him.
Just take a look at Rebuild 3.0, at least he gets a "kind of" happy ending in EOE

I actually ordered the Rebuild DVDs the other day, so I'll be seeing them soon - my hopes for a happy ending are pretty much non-existent though.

Well, this was unexpected. Lovely, but unexpected.

Glad it was a nice surprise at least! yeah I've been having a few Eva feels recently and just wanted to get something drawn to get some of it out of my system. It worked but I just ordered the first DVD of the remake so they'll all be back again soon :'D

Shinji is just a messed up kid. All the pilots are.

That's very true, but I don't think that means he deserves to get slated quite so much as I've seen people do. The other two pilots certainly don't get as much flack as him, at least from the discussions I've had.

I watched part of one of the films but never got round to finishing it or watching the rest of the series.
I was interested because I am a secretly nerdy fan of Gundam and I heard that it was a Gundam anime. I know it's weird but I like it, I actually have one of the manga on my shelf (it's a spin off thingy though I think an AU of some description, but the art is pretty)
P.s. Loving the drawing :')

It's not made by the same studio that made the Gundam franchise, but it's basically the same cookie-cutter concept of all mecha anime from that time period - giant monsters threaten Earth as we know it and the only thing that can defeat them is a kid piloting a giant robot. I've no idea how far the first film gets into the series (the equivalent of about 6 episodes of the original I think) but it's not until you get about halfway through that it starts getting seriously weird. Towards the end it just gets creepy bordering on gross.Β This is from someone who's seen Akira five times.Β But if you like that kind of stuff, I guess it does it well :'D Really looking forward to watching the remake, it supposedly diverts from the original a lot so I'm keen to see where it ends up. And I've not seen any of the mange but I know they did several AU spinoffs, might check them out too if I have the chance C:
And thank you! It was only a quick sketch but I felt like I had to finish it ;u;

I don't think anything bow there's me anymore after watching Mardock Scramble... It's the fact that I actually LIKE Mardock Scramble that worries me...
If you want messed up, weird and altogether innapropriate they're the films for you XD
And I like weird stuffs, and I like your drawing :') I hate drawings that start off as doodles and turn into massive projects

I can't say I know anything about it other than recognising the name, but if it's sci-fi then I'm sure I'll enjoy it!Β

It is sci fi, but it's morbid and the second film will disturb you, it's just odd, but I love it
