Description At one point in one of my classes I had an assignment to redesign the costumes for a classic movie or play to embody the spirit of the original designs, but with our own/modern twist on them. I had to do My Fair Lady, but always thought it would be fun to do the same with Jane Austen.

Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book. I'm one of those girls who has creepy things like Pride and Prejudice bath towels and board games. This sketch was inspired by Elizabeth's comment to Jane - "Until then, I never knew myself." - in regards to reading Darcy's letter after his first, disastrous proposal.

So Lizzy - and a moment of self-realization.

Gosh I was so tired I wrote Prise instead of Pride... Sorry ^^"" Pls forgive me! T^T
Yeah, I know! One of many reasons why I adore this romance so much is that I can read it all the time *.*
But one thing bothers me: why Mr Darcy had to turn out to be such a good boy after all? T^T It was surprising to me, didn't expect Austen to switch from a bad boy type to Mr Perfect o.O At least not so suddenly What do you think?

The transformation does seem very sudden, but actually, chronologically in the story there is actually a considerable period of time between Darcy's proposal and them seeing each other again at Pemberly (at least 3 or 4 months). They've both had a lot of time to think about the proposal (Elizabeth to think about the content's of Darcy's letter, and Darcy to think about Elizabeth's accusations to him when he proposed, some of which were unfounded, but some of which were justified) - I think that since the story is told through Elizabeth's POV and since she is an easily likable character (generally good natured, witty, clever...) the reader tends to relate to her and share her opinions. When the disastrous proposal happens you realize that she is arrogant in her own way; in Darcy's case she jumped to conclusions, made assumptions based on very little information, and judged him based on her own prejudiced opinions. So in a way, prior to the proposal, they were both 'bad' in that they were arrogantly sure that they were in the right. I always read Darcy as someone for whom doing the 'right' or 'proper' thing is paramount. I think that Elizabeth's accusations really hit him - not that he was unfair to Wickham, but that his behavior to her, her family, and anyone 'beneath' him was 'ungentlemanly'. There's a section in the book when Elizabeth is relating the proposal to Jane and basically admitting that Darcy made her see all her own flaws. And I think Elizabeth did the same for him. So I think the transformation that you see in him is after he has had time to reflect on what was said and is trying to deport himself in a way that better upholds his personal ideals.

Whew. I should stop before I go TOO crazy ^^

WOW XD Such a thorough analysis
I have to think about it a lil' bit more before responding... XD
But! I still feel like this change was too sudden. We don't know what was happening with Darcy(I mean from his pov) during these 3/4 months. Both Darcy and Elizabeth were not only prejudiced against each other, but also very proud. Lizzy's rejection hurt Mr Darcy's pride just as he hurt her's("His sense of her inferiority - of its being a degradation(..)As he said this, she could easily see that he had no doubt of a favourable answer." uff good that I bought English version of this book ) Their relationship allowed them both to grow humble. But it would be definetely more interesting to see Darcy's change. I always had this feeling that Elizabeth wasn't as bad - yeah she was prejudiced and proud, but this pride was her defence against people like Darcy who though they're better because they had more money. Pride gave her strength, she didn't want to be 'bullied' because of her lower social standing :> Darcy, on the other hand... He thought he could judge Jane's affection towards Bingley, he was prejudiced against Bennets. If not for his argument with Lizzy he would never know that Jane really loved his friend. And he felt almost humiliated while confessing to Elizabeth... So in that moment he couldn't overcome his pride. Gosh, I wish I could see him changing ;( Oh well... Can't have everything T^T
And sorry for any mistakes :>

I agree with everything you say. It would be lovely to know more about what was going on with Darcy - we really see very little of him, and almost all of it is colored through Lizzy's interpretation of him. Add to the situation that his sister Georgiana almost eloped in August, and he met Lizzy at the end of September, who knows how he would have behaved if he hadn't just had all of that happen.

I guess that's why there are so many authors out there who have written the story from his point of view, to try and explain/understand why he seems to transform so quickly from the proposal to the next time he sees Lizzy. ^^

The costume or something about her puts me in mind of Europe, a character from "The Monster Blood Trilogy" of childrens books (she's a monster hunter who can wield electricity). Hmm.. The hair almost makes her seem grecian (just need a acropolis out the window)

I just read "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" - it's quite fun. (I also finished "Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters" - S&S is my favorite Austen. LoL.)

Anywho, I really like this one! It's definitely the big shift in Elizabeth, and the emotion really comes across for that. And not to fixate, but her hair is really gorgeous.

I did! And supposedly, Natalie Portman is going to be Elizabeth. A bit on the small and thin side, but I like her enough. I have hope it will be entertaining at least, even if it's not going to be grand, Oscar-winning epic, lol.

Truer words were never said. I think Austen would have appreciated the term "awesomesauce", she was a spunky sassy lady after all.
