Ohhhh I've been speculating some ideas for his backgrounds too!
His design is extremely interesting for a reploid because one has to wonder "hmmm, his designers - why would they design him that way? What would be the function for this and that? Extra subtanks? Longer durability out in the wild?"
But the problem is that by the time X4 rolls around, there's probably a thriving reploid underworld and blackmarket that allows for illegal custom jobs so Double can have an unregistered form and be able to apply into the Hunters. So it's perfectly reasonable to think that he may have been an absolutely different reploid before - like a really ordinary civiloid!
Although one thing I have noticed is that compare to any other reploid in the X series, Double mentions about the afterlife frequently. Could he be spiritual?
