Description
Taken in Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, Russia. The Gallery of the Patriotic War of 1812, built in 1826 by Carlo Rossi. The walls are lined with 329 portraits of the Russian generals who took part in campaigns against Napoleon, 1812-1814.I personally was more impressed by this gorgeous ceiling. Handheld(Unfortunately being forced to use f2.8 due to lack of tripod resulted bad DoF which bugs me a bit...:/) 3 exposures with +-0.7 autobracketing. 2 HDR processings in Photomatix Pro 4. One for the ceiling details and one for the walls. Final processing in CS5 with the original 0 exposure shot. 33% opacity for the wall HDR and 39% opacity for the ceiling HDR blended on the original.
Hope you like it!...
Cheers,
Janne

I was there in April... I remember being very pissed off because I wasn't allowed to take photos in those corridors X_D I took one anyway, like everyone else...
I wish I could had taken the time and aim to take a proper, good photo like this one... it's very pretty, I like the glowing feeling coming from the ceiling!

Thanks, Carmen! Thing was that you needed to pay 200 rubels to get a permission sticker that allows you to take photos. You put it on your camera. But this is not very good photo to my mind. I didn't have a tripod on my trip to St.Petersburg and I would have sorely needed one to be able to take this shot better. Still, it seems popular though here on DA...

Yeah, the problem is that I went there on an organized trip with Erasmus students, so our guide had something like just one group ticket for all of us, and it was such a mess and rush in the wardroves and stuff, we didn't get the chance to get permission to take photos at all... I am glad I managed to go to Russia for a pretty good price (even the Visa was les expensive and lasted a longer time because it was a students trip) but after that experience, I am not going to a big city with a large group, ever again ha ha ha

Mmm.. Hermitage.. I like this hall with portraits. I am from Russia but I first visited St. Petersburg and see it in this August. As I know this missing portraits (green places) on the reconstruction, but I could be wrong. I hope you left a good impression on St. Petersburg (;

I do like the shot, but I have a question. What are the empty green spaces with no pictures for? Did they have a name, but no photo?

Kiitos! Our guide told why but I can't remember if they were stolen or just gone in a bad shape while hanging there...

I think the shot is perfect as it is, the shallow DoF gives a soft ghostly feel to the image which suits the subject. Faded portraits of long dead and forgotten heroes.

It's due to the fact that by the time the artist started working on the portraits some of the generals had already died and there were no available images of them.
