Description
Another update on my latest project: a portrait of late imperial roman legionary equipment from around the time of the sassanid wars and the sack of Dura Europos in modern Syria in the 250s AD.All the displayed objects are made in scale 1:18. This mask helmet is a "copy" of the well known Crosby Garrett Helmet and was part of a cavalry soldier's tournament armour (in literature you often read about "parade armour") as discribed by Arrian roughly a century prior the displayed time period in his ἱππικὰ γυμνάσια. So most likely this kind of mask helmets were already long out of combat use in the mid 3rd century (ohter than the 1st century AD kalkrise type).
Since it might have been worn for training purposes or maybe by higher ranking horsemen like a vexillarius equitum I decided to include it. I'd still be happy for critique or feedback on that matter!
The helmet consists - like the original one - of two parts: the face mask with the locks and the back of the head in the shape of a phrygian hat, crowned by a griffin sculpture. This way it's possible to actually put it on figures of the same scale. It's made of polymer clay and is painted. The face and the griffin are additionally covered with thin metal foil.
I hope you like it! More updates will hopefully follow soon!
