Description I recently made good progress with my latest project: a portrait of the 3rd century late imperial Roman army in the east of the empire.

I finally finished the first two legionaries (and hopefully some more are soon to follow). Both of them are wearing square scutum-shields inspired by the fantastic Dura Europos scutum which colourful painting has survived countless centuries. The left one is wearing a chainmail and one of the very common helmet types of that time, type Niederbieber (Made of polymer clay and covered in metal foil), with a optional feather crest on its top. The soldier on the right is wearing a lorica squamata and a kind of chainmail-hood. This kind of head protection is believed to be displayed on a fresco from the synagoge in Dura Europos which probably displays the battle of Ebenezer, showing the soldiers in contemporary armour. This unusual headgear might be of sassanid origin though it's unclear whether the fresco represents chainmail or scale-armour and has been reconstructed both ways.

The two soldiers themselves consist of a needle felted core around a wire armature which allows it to put them into different poses. their hands feet and heads are sculpted out of polymer clay and handpainted.

I hope you like it. Since I'm trying to be as historically accurate as possible I'd be happy for any kind of comment, critique or discussion on that matter! Thank you!
