Description

    Zelda sat in Link’s lap, arms around his neck, running her fingers through his hair as she pulled him to her lips. She sighed softly as his strong arms wrapped around her back and waist, his lips pressed gently against her own. She kissed him deeper, nibbling his lip and tracing her open mouth along his cheek, then her tongue along his jaw.

    She opened her eyes when Link didn’t respond. He was staring at the floor. She was disappointed at first, even a little self-conscious, but grew concerned at his furrowed brow and sad eyes.

    “Hey,” she said, trying and failing to attract his gaze, “what’s the matter?”

    Link shook his head and gave a small shrug. “I don’t know,” he said quietly.

    “Can I help somehow?”

    Link didn’t answer. His breath shook as he shrugged again. Zelda sat up in his lap, draping an arm around his shoulders and placing her other hand on his. She squeezed him, and Link rested his head against hers. He trembled, the corner of his mouth twitching as he whimpered once.

    “You don’t have to be strong here,” said Zelda, kissing her husband on the temple. “It’s just the two of us. You can let go.”

    Link choked out a sob and wept into Zelda’s chest, the Queen tenderly holding him and idly running her hand up and down his back. She wanted to pinpoint what was bothering him and fix it, and maybe they could do so later. But, she realized, sometimes people just feel awful.
