When a small rock fell over the path's edge, Tarth heard no further sign of its existence. Whether it would fall onto an unseeable floor or plummet forever into the Great Void beneath the world, he did not know, and thought it better to focus on what lay ahead.
The warrior regarded Princess Reza, whose bare feet seemed unaffected by the rough, cold stone beneath. She was every bit royalty—her clothing was of the finest silk, her perfume of exotic fragrances from distant lands, her skin soft from a life of leisure and pampering. And yet, she bore chains, running from her wrists to a collar about her neck. The collar itself was of a make Tarth had never before seen, for it was sealed shut and bore no lock of any kind. The Princess wore gold, silk, and emeralds, and yet she wore a collar more restrictive than those of even the lowest slaves.
Despite her incarceration within her own home, despite her hopeless life, despite her being given to the Queen's Chosen for his pleasure, Reza still carried herself as royalty. She spoke with authority, held herself tall and proud, and showed no sign of weakness.
Tarth knew that she had not yet revealed her true plans to him. No one helped a stranger for free. But, if she were to help him slay the Queen's Chosen, he would be more than willing to do away with the Queen herself. Queen Reza would ascend to the throne, and at the least she would not be worse than her sister.
And, perhaps, she may even seek a consort.
