Description Hetalia

A picture of Matthew (Canadian paratrooper), Alfred (American airman), and Arthur (British army/marine) before the Day of Days. I must have redrew this in many different poses and angles, but I saw a clip from Ken Burns' "The War" and was touched by it.

I love the sense of camaraderie present between these three here - it's noticeable even if you can't see their expressions. Very well-done usage of body launguage to express that. Plain and simple, nice work~!

I love how your art incorporates a lot more War than others, with a pinch of humor

Thank you! I was a big WW2 nut long before Hetalia came along. Drawing Hetalia fanart instead of doodling Afrika Korps soldiers was a lot more appropriate and involved less misunderstandings XD

Also, classy historical touch to show a paratrooper, an airman and an infantryman, like summing up the phases of operation Overlord (I don't know whether it was intentional or not, but still it's great).

Well, it's official, I love your art and going to watch you right now

thank you!

It actually came into being by accident... hehehe America and England were already placed into their respected branches, but for poor Canada it was 'Bwah? What uniform is that from?" I thought paratrooper was badass enough for him .

VFreie In reply to JapDrow [2009-08-09 16:18:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh my pleasure

Hehe, Canada was definitely in need for some more love and some badass ^^ A lot of people (at least out of Anglo-Saxon countries) don't even know that Canadian troops took part in the D-Day

JapDrow In reply to VFreie [2009-08-10 05:14:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know a lot of Americans are not aware of it (I was one of them until a few years ago ) I'm quite surprised this is so for other Anglo-Saxon countries. Poor Canada....

Ah, reminds me of when I started reading about WW2 history a little more thoroughly than the basic facts taught in school; I was like: "Wha-wha-what, Canadians in the D-Day? Poles captured Monte Cassino? A revolt in Iraq in 1941?" etc etc

This is tremendously excellent! And elegant! And... what else?! (Someone, quick, give me a descriptive word. )

I loved how you emphasized the importance of Canada's involve, as equal to America and the UK, and the closeness between the three.

Ken Burns is AMAZING! I have his book about the civil war (loves it) and has tried to watch the actual documentaries, but can never find them available anywhere. I did attend a show at the Brattle Theater once, where they showed powerfully emotional excerpts from a few of his most famous documentaries (this was before "The War" was made). Man, that Burns guy can make anything interesting! and... guess what? I got to MEET HIM! :cheer: He was incrediably nice to me and my sister and my Dad, gave us the time of day, great to talk to, and he even signed my book for me.

JapDrow In reply to ProfRasah [2009-07-09 04:10:48 +0000 UTC]

This makes me sooo glad I decided not to draw this in a goofy way XD

Canada deserves recognition !!! It irritates me how very few WWII movies and documentaries even mentions Canada's involvement. That's why Ken Burns holds a special place in my heart...

AND YOU GOT TO MEET KEN BURNS!!!! Lucky... My only, yet very shallow, cosolation is that I have the civil war documentary. But I'm surprised you couldn't find it. There's always the internet but I would think a lot libraries would carry it. I hope you do find it. It's very good and I actually cried at a few parts.

I think the angle of the piece, showing the men's back invoke an emotional sad feeling about the war and the men who fought in it. Nice!!!! : )

This is actually the first time I drew people from the back, so this was challenging! I'm glad I finished it this way instead of making it silly and casual.

El-Randissimo [2009-06-08 23:36:55 +0000 UTC]

Is this them being friendly before America literally dropped the bomb?

One last look at the war behind them before it ends, end then walking away, trying to get rid of the weight of death and loss by replacing it with joy and friendship.

Oh, the silly and horrible things war weaves through the seams.

JapDrow In reply to El-Randissimo [2009-06-09 04:45:54 +0000 UTC]

Nah. I got the idea from clip from Ken Burns' "The War". It was that of three airmen walking away from the camera and then the middle man wraps his arms around the two of them, bringing them closer. It was a showing of brotherly friendship, but more importantly, it was also showing the three main players of D-Day. What I really liked was how it accidentally became an allusion to the 3 stages of the D-Day invasion: paratrooper landings, the air bombings, and the amphibious landings.

Wow, such an epic collection of pictures here... Well, true to be said, war is not that flashy and awesome... for the ones fighting (and the civilians whit the bad luck to be in the middle) pretty much suck. But I like this one particularly because in the battlefield soldiers make some really moving brotherhood ties. Great job!
