Description
Ok here is my first project post, and it is a finished project.I heard I about the foam building tech a year ago , and could never find the foam in any stores. I refused to pay the shipping for it online. So when I was in Biglots and came across some mat foam I was very happy.
I got the foam for $18, and it is a lot.
I decided I wanted to make some Sayain armour from the anime cartoon Dragon Ball Z.
Here are my resources, and tools.
Action figure reffrence.
The Foam.
A permanent marker to draw on the foam.
Tape measurer t get size of waste, and from hip to hip over shoulder.
A Exacto knife to cut out the patern.
heat gun to shape the foam.
straight edge to make sure your drimmle lines are straight. ( I used a paint mixing stick)
drimmle to cut the design into the foam.
Grey primer paint.
Acrylic paints.
A brush to paint with, and a spunge brush to dry brush with.
Velcro to close the armour.
I decided I wanted to do this all in one hunk of foam and have it fit on the wearer like a ponch.
After getting my measurements just right , and drawing the design on to paper. I cut the paper out as a mock test to see if it would fit me. It worked so I traced the paper design onto the foam.
Using the Exacto knife I cut out the foam.
Next I drew the design onto the foam with a marker and straight edge.
After than I drawing the design I usinged my drimmle and straight edge to get the details into the foam.
Next I shaped the foam after heating it with a heat gun.
Once the shaping the foam. I put it on a close hanger and hung it from a tree in my back yard and primered it. I let it set for a few hours and when when I came back to get it I found that my dog had eaten part of it.
The wind had blown it down from the tree and she made a meal of it.
I never seem to finish any of my builds. So after getting so close to finished I was determined to complete this one.
So I painted it battle damaged .
I dry brushed the white areas with whie acrylic paint on a sponge brush. This kept the drimmle lines grey from the primering, adding depth, and texture.
Next I brushed on a base brown/tanish/ olive color over straps and abs.
After the base color I added a high light over the raised areas.
Then I when between the straps etching area with a darker brown.
All the area that was eaten away I decied was burned. So I went over that with a black dry brush. Then added a bit of dark red for dried blood.
My goal with my builds/ costumes is to make something movie qulity. I think I did that, and for cheap.

I used the kind that comes in a roll, but I have seen people using the interlocking color
pieces.Β

The roll is a little thinner and easier to work with at around 1/3 of an inch thick.
While the square connecting mats are almost 1/2 an inch, and a bit harder to fold.Β
You use the side that is smooth.Β

I am sorry. I am really busy right now. I have been trying to get one of these done for someone for almost a year now. It wouldnt be right to take on any more armor commissions while his is not finished.

Is it all on piece or Velcro side to get into it! Looks mint by the way Β

There are 2 strips of Velcro on each side.
I am thinking about trying elastic bands to hold it closed.
Then you can just put it on, and take it offΒ by yourself.

I am going to try a new way of making it.Β
This was ok, but I think I might have a better more durable method coming up next.Β
I don't want to sell anything that will not hold up.

Where are you out if cuz I really want one for Halloween if that's okay I mean I'm only going to wear it once so it doesn't have to be the most durable justr enough to last a couple days

Was there a specific acrylic paint you used? and for primer did u use something special? or just Grey acrylic?

jaredjlee In reply to majinschmidt34 [2013-08-22 02:52:58 +0000 UTC]
I used grey primer out of a spray can. I used the acrylic paints you would find in the crafts section. Nothing special.

I can, but it would not be cheap. Β
I encourage everyone to make their own.
At the moment they have to be fitted to the person with really accurate measurements. Β I have to figure out how to make them adjustable. I don't want to be known for selling bad products.

What kind of foam is "the foam"? I've been hoping to make something like this myself.
π: 0 β©: 1
jaredjlee In reply to starryeyedq [2013-07-08 10:48:59 +0000 UTC]
The foam is called EVA foam, or impact foam. It is the kind of foam you put on the floor.
[link]
I get the kind that comes on a roll. It is slightlyu thinner than the one in squares so it is more pliable.

Would you consider selling this if your customer knew it could possible fall apart and maybe repair it themselfs? and if so how much?

venom34 In reply to jaredjlee [2013-04-14 16:18:46 +0000 UTC]
Well honestly I'm not good at that kind of thing, seweing materials arnt too bad but I can't make this at all!!
So if you ever do feel like making another one (Vegeta Android/Celll Saga) then I would definitely be up for buying one
one thing, do you have any way of making gloves and shoes that will match up?
π: 0 β©: 1
jaredjlee In reply to venom34 [2013-04-15 01:57:32 +0000 UTC]
For the boots I bought white captain boots.
For the gloves I bought Power Ranger gloves from ebay.

I have in the past. I did not know they were so fragile at the time. I had only made one when I did. Then I got the offer so I made one for them and one for me...
It was not until later that I found out that the way I made it was not as durable as I thought.
Next time I make these I will use 2 layers of foam. That should make them very strong.

Amazing work would you ever sell saiyan armor? If so how much would a Not Battle damaged one cost?, since I'm rarely on here email me

like I said great work

I have in the past, but I wish I had known what I know now about the material I was using. Did some test runs or something before going off and selling the armor.
I don't want to make products I wouldn't use. That is why the first time I sold one I made one for myself too. After a while of use the straps feel off ...
So I figure that happened to the armor I made for my customer. So I feel bad about that, and I don't want it to happen again.
So after getting more knowledge I might take commissions again. I don't want to be known for making junk.

how did you make the little crevices around the chest and side panels and in the shoulder straps and abdomen area? is the foam body all one piece or are there layers of foam on top? I found the $18 roll at biglots too and I want to try this!
π: 0 β©: 1
jaredjlee In reply to jachanzar [2012-10-26 16:56:35 +0000 UTC]
I used a drimel. Its one of those hand drills with a sanding bit.
The second one I did with wood burning tool. That worked a lot cleaner, but it gives off fumes.
I just didn't push all the way through the foam.

Way to make a problem into a solution. AND! You did a helluva, 'cause if that's the kind of foam I'm thinking of? That's some tough stuff to work with.
Props.

It is pretty unforgiving. If you cut something wrong you cant correct it.
You have to work withnit or start over. It get things done fast. You just have to plan ahead and know for sure what you want.
