I don't understand why people hate on the romance dawn arc so much...I just don't, the main purpose was to introduce Luffy and keep you wanting to know more about him

I dont hate the "Romance Dawn" arc as you put it. I just think it could have been done better. It does its job like you say, but in terms of story telling, it does JUST that. It did nothing else to make any sort of lasting impression on me. When it comes to writing a story, there are certain ways of doing things that are just considered smarter writing. Think Terminator 1 to Terminator 2. The second one is miles better, despite having pretty much the same concept. How things are done, the writing and the plot make a huge difference. Thats my two cents anywho..

XD I felt the same way. I got into One Piece during the Baratie arc and got so excited about the manga, only to go back and find out it starts with Luffy fighting something that made me swear of McDonalds for 2 months. I'm so glad things got better later on.

I agree with you about getting hooked around the Kuro arc. If anything I'm only thankful to 4kids for making me aware of the series and then buying the books at local store and HOLY CRAP blew my mind and got me hooked into my long run of over 50+ of them which my brother loves also. Well that felt long-winded but I'm talkative type, great comics by the way

Thanks. I know the feeling. I checked out One Piece years ago 'cause I heard it was generally well praised by the anime community at the time. My first experience with it was reading chapters 45 to 47 in an issue of Shonen Jump and remembering how I thought that it really stood out. It was funny, had good action, and I thought the art was truly unique. Months later I read the whole thing in one go: I believe I caught up to the manga at water 7. Story of my life. How's THAT for being long-winded?

Why would ever think that? I LOVE One Piece. It's my favorite series. No other series has kept my attention for this long. Like a girlfriend you've come to respect years after the "young love" phase dies out. Ummm.... ignore that.

Couldn't agree more. I truly got into the series during the along arc....where I even shed tears! Before then, I quit 5 times....And each time i went back to the manga was due to the lack of other mangas to read. After the arlong arc...I got completely addicted with One Piece. I've been following it ever since x)

I more or less just started reading in it years ago cause I heard good things about it. I remember reading a few chapters of the Baratie arc in the western Shonen Jump and being impressed with the art, comedy and action. It seemed like a good blend. I think I caught up to the manga around the beginning of Water 7.

Sounds like you liked the first ep. That's great, everyones entitled to their opinion, I just think it was lacking. Compared to some other short stories I've read, it did nothing to capture my attention. It more or less just introduced Luffy and Coby in such an... average episode. To me, the farther you get into One Piece, the more genuine emotion there seems to be put into every scene... it's hard to explain. It was solid from a writers perspective, but thats just it... it did nothing special. I know of quite a few people that were put off of One Piece because they had heard legendary things about it and then watched it up to the Buggy arc before quitting in dissapointment.

oh weelllll thats too bad. I heard nothing before i started watching. I just saw an add for it while i was watching Naruto and it was under another one of those "other shows u might like" boxes. It turned out clicking on that damn box was the best thing ever. And since i had never heard of it before and it was only my second anime, i thought the first episode fitfully introduced u to Luffy's personality. I thought Coby was just kinda along for the ride. And since he hardly has a bounty at that moment and is still focused on Nami, I think the Buggy arc was a kinda messy way to bring Nami fulling into the picture or something.

we all do. I only watch anime in japanese for that reason. But i do have to say.....i loved this first episode. I'd never really heard of a pirate with powers before so....

You and me both. The manga started far better with badass pirates and a guy getting his arm bitten off.
