Description
An extremist who's views on law and order are on the borderline of fascism, Lyle Bolton is the ruthless Lock Up. A crazed sociopath who has no remorse or compassion for the criminals he's faced. A man who is obsessed with the penal system, Lock Up is a mockery of the prison and judicial system, and he has proven to be one of Batman's greatest enemies, because their views are not so far apart. The only difference is Batman has more compassion for his enemies, and Lock Up just loves beating on them with an inch of their misbegotten lives.Debuting in Batman The Animated Series, Lock Up was one of Bruce Timm and Paul Dini's creations. Lock Up is a ruthless and unstable individual who takes pleasure in prisoning and torturing his enemies. An extreme architype of the usual conservative republican, (which was hinted in his episode) Lyle Bolton has made a handful of appearances in the comics, but hasn't caught the same level of recognition as Harley Quinn, nor was his backstory ever truly explored besides the one seen. In the DC Unlimited this is much more explored. Lyle Bolton was born in Gotham City. His father was a police officer and equally extreme conservative. However this was in a period where Gotham's police force was corrupted before the days of Jim Gordon and Batman. Lyle's father was also an abusive man trying to toughen up his son through the same means Lyle himself would employ on the inmates of Arkham Asylum. As he got older, Lyle Bolton joined the marines, specializing in locks and high tech security systems, and gained an honorable discharge. Making him the perfect candidate for the Wayne Foundation grant, and brought to Arkham Asylum. His extremism also made him a prime candidate for Hugo Strange's TYGER Program. Strange had records of Bolton's history of prisoner abuse in the military, which no one knew about. So they shared the same vision. To suppress his anger, Strange hypnotized and brainwashed Bolton, making him seem more well adjusted to those surrounding him, but Bolton's rage and sociopathic tendencies towards the inmates would continue. Which bring to the Arkham hearings board. After many of the inmates testified against Bolton, (I.E. Harley Quinn, Ventriloquist, Scareface and Scarecrow), his anger erupted, causing him immediate dismissal. Bolton realized in his warped mind, the criminals of Gotham were only symptoms of Gotham's failure, the causes were "gutless police. Mindless bureaucrats, and coddling doctors." and "the permissive liberal media." This anger pushed him over the limit, and having acquired special armor from Hugo Strange, Lyle became the vigilante known as Lock Up. Bolton would have continuous run ins with Batman who implored similar methods to his war on crime, but was tempered with compassion and respect for all life. Lock Up viewed this as weakness, claiming Batman was a crazy they were. But their battles would continue.
In the DC Unlimited, Lock Up still continues his methodically obsessive war on those who failed Gotham City. But would be confronted by fellow Gotham Rogue Anarky. Lock Up from the moment he met Anarky hated him and wanted to kill him, because Anarky was "a snot nosed punk who had no respect for authority." And the hatred was mutual, as Anarky saw Bolton as a pure fascist, creating the ultimate feud of ideologies. Batman is caught straight in the middle of the feud, hoping to take both down without harm coming to anyone. Still under the influence of Strange, Bolton joined up with him in his Excalibur project.

I think it adds more to his character and makes him feel more human that was used and effected by the world around him

Well thanks to the addition of Strange brainwashing Bolton when he first joined Arkham, Lock Up was able to pick up the same fighting styles as Batman
