The onboard tapes says that this was quite painless - the've lost their consciousness before they realised what's going on. Much more painful were deaths of those who were closed in high pressure chamber and pressurized until death during World War II in Japan. Try "decompression scene" (from Philosophy of the Knife) on YouTube, but I'm warning, this is very brute and disguisting piece of movie.
