When I saw the skeleton king I instantly thought he resembled the skeletons from Heroes of Might and Magic V. ;D

I can't recall exactly as the original was done a while ago. Typically I would do the underpainting in photoshop, paint on top of that in Artrage, then finish it in Photoshop.
